He rushes in and stops at the edge of Adrian’s bed. Adrian’s eyes widen in surprise. “Hey, champ.” Liam pulls out a folded paper from his bag. “I made you a drawing.” Adrian tries to sit up straighter. “Let’s see.” Liam hands it over carefully. It’s a crayon sketch of the three of us—me, Liam, and Adrian—holding hands under a bright yellow sun. There’s even a dog beside us, though we don’t have one. Adrian stares at it, clearly touched. “This is amazing.”

"Fuck, after that last one, I'll happily let you draw a pretty picture on my face." The girls smiled brightly and made their way to our side of the table. Brian gave each of them a black marker and flipped a timer. Hycinth was still wearing her heels, making it easier for her to reach me. I felt her draw quick lines on my cheeks and above my eyebrows, before drawing a circle on my nose and filling it in. "Times up!" Brian called out. "What did you draw?" I asked curiously, although I had an idea. She smirked, "You make an adorable pussy...cat."

There, he saw Joy sitting under a large tree, drawing something on the ground with a small twig. Damian hesitated for a moment, but finally got the courage to approach Joy. "Hi, Joy," he greeted her softly. Joy raised her head and smiled widely. "Hi, Damian! Want to join us?" Damian smiled nervously. "I... I can't stay long. But I want to see what you drew." Joy proudly showed him the drawing she had made on the ground. It was a picture of a house with a flower garden and the sun shining brightly. "This is my dream house," Joy said with sparkling eyes. "One day, I will live here, with many friends."

He held out a rolled piece of paper, tied with a red ribbon that was slightly crumpled as though it had been tied by someone still learning to tie things with precision. She looked at it. She looked at George. He was already looking at her. She untied the ribbon. She unrolled the paper. A drawing. Crayon. A man in the middle — taller, dark-haired, smiling with the specific crayon smile of someone whose artist has studied them. A woman on the left — dark hair, a purple coat that Kristine had worn last week. And a small girl on the right with her father's eyes, which Lily had rendered in blue crayon with considerable care.

For a little guy, he is way too good. There are all different kinds of drawings that are too neat, I shuffle through them, trying to find one to stick on our fridge in the kitchen. I smile to myself when I come across a picture of him and I then there's Jasmine and even Alex, with and without devil horns— that makes me laugh. I pass by other boyish things, like cars, dragons, dogs, dinosaurs and ninjas, lots and lots of them.

Breathing hard but grinning. "To make you feel better," Karin added. She thrust a piece of paper toward me. "Because you looked sad." I took the paper. Held it up to catch the moonlight. A drawing. Crude but recognizable. Four figures holding hands beneath a smiling sun. Me. Karson. Carl. Karin. A family. "That's us," Carl explained eagerly. "See? That's you with the crown because you're a princess. And that's Dad. And that's me and Karin."

“I’m sorry it took me this long.” “You came.” “I almost didn’t.” “But you did.” Ava looked between us. “Why are you both crying?” Sienna laughed. “They’re happy tears.” “Oh.” She smiled. “I like happy tears better.” “So do I.” She climbed off my lap. “Can we draw now?” I laughed. “Of course.” For the next hour we sat on the floor together drawing pictures. Ava insisted on drawing all three of us holding hands. She carefully added a bright yellow sun in the corner. “That’s us.”

"You can look now, Ate Graziel." Graziel accepted the drawing with a warm smile. Three stick figures were drawn on the paper. One was a tall man. One was a little girl. And the last one was a woman with long hair. All three of them were holding hands. A gentle smile appeared on Graziel's face. "It's beautiful." "This is Daddy." Junie pointed at the tallest figure. "And this is me." Graziel nodded. "And this..." The little girl smiled brightly. "...is you."

"What does your new friend look like, Heidi?" Heidi proudly lifted her drawing. It was a crude, childish sketch of a very tall figure standing between two giant green trees. The figure was colored completely in dark gray and black crayons, but the most unsettling part was the face. Heidi had used a bright yellow crayon to draw two massive, perfectly round circles for the eyes.

"Uncle Damian! Look at my drawing!" She shoved a crayon portrait into his hands. It showed four stick figures: a tall one with spiky black hair (Damian), a tall one with messy brown hair (Julian), a medium one with long black hair (me), and a small one with pigtails (Lily). They were all holding hands under a yellow sun. "We're all holding hands," Lily explained. "Because we're a family." Damian stared at the drawing for a long moment. His throat moved. When he looked up, his eyes were suspiciously bright.
