You are allowed to love without losing yourself. You are allowed to walk away if something no longer serves you. You are allowed to stay if something still does.

As I walked out of my apartment, the warm Monday morning sun hit my face, and I couldn't help but feel a sense of liberation. I had made the decision to quit my job at the hospital. I wanted to savor the moment, enjoy the feeling of freedom without any judgment or questions.

Her fingers curled slowly into a fist, but her face stayed calm. She once read a quote that said, “When disappointment builds up long enough, letting go becomes easy.” Maybe her time with Zac was finally coming to an end.

Like people who believed they had time. I stared at it for a long time, and when I couldn’t stand it anymore, I turned it back over. “Then don’t.” “I have to limit it.” “How?” I hesitate. Because saying it out loud makes it real. “I have to close the connection,” I say. His brow furrows. “What does that mean?” “It means cutting this space off from everything else,” I explain. “No threads. No links. No way for the void to reach beyond this point.” “And that’s good, right?” “Yes.” He exhales slightly. “Then do it.” I don’t move. Because that’s not the full truth.

More fragile. Because I could feel it. Slowly. Piece by piece. I was losing control. Of everything. A quiet breath left my lips. “I just want to take some time off…” I said. Away from all of this. Away from the pressure. Away from the constant reminder of who I was here. Or rather— Who I wasn’t. “Maybe that’s what I’ll do…” I murmured. The thought settled slowly. Carefully. Like something I wasn’t fully ready to admit.

"Are you sure? This is a significant opportunity." "I know. And I'm grateful. But I've realized my life is here. My family is here. I can't leave." "Well, if you're sure. We're disappointed, but we understand. If anything changes, please reach out." After I hang up, I feel lighter. Unburdened. I've made the choice. Now I just have to live with it. I call the London landlord, terminate the lease. I call Leo's school, withdraw him. I call Maureen, thank her for her time but explain I won't need her services.
