Now, it would take more than telling everyone the truth about Elijah and Caleb, to regain their trust and loyalty. "Are you there, Zeta?" Cyrus checked if I was still hearing him through the mindlink. "Yes, I am." I answered curtly. I needed to prove to them that I wasn't cursed. But there was nothing I would be able to do that if even I still find it hard to believe that I wasn't cursed. "So if there's no curse mysteriously killing the wolves I courted in the past, why and how had they all died?" I asked no one in particular.

She handed over the third talisman an amulet shaped like a crescent moon made of black stone. They returned to the fortress with the talismans. The final piece was Elizabeth herself—the heart of the Golden Line. As the full moon rose, the ritual began in the sacred chamber beneath the fortress. Carvings on the walls glowed. The air was thick with magic and memory. Each talisman was placed on a pedestal, forming a circle around Elizabeth. The Codex floated above her, pages turning on their own. The ground shook. Flames danced from the walls. Elizabeth chanted the ancient incantation. Her voice echoed through the planes of existence.

But also, rightfully feared when it matters. Feared. That’s all this shit was about, inciting it … invoking it. As long as we’re afraid they win. “Angel, listen to me. It’s gonna be fucking impossible now because of the storms. But Natalya had on a gold talisman with a huge black coal stone. I’m willing to bet the curse lives on in it. I know that’s not what we teach or believe, but it’s our best hope now. You guys need to find it,” I said, making a fist with the hand touching the shield.

It always happens whenever I'm scared. "Calm down, Cara, lest you reveal your powers to him," Hana whispers angrily. "If that happens we can kiss this place goodbye because we'll be thrown out as bad bloods." Bad bloods. Otherwise known as the Ruined, or the Cursed. The spoilt apples.

“Another mark on our backs.” Her energy surged through Talia’s body, snapping her into a fighter’s stance. “Kaela,” Talia warned. “Calm.” Sera spoke next, dry and unflinching. “You can likely add my mate to that list. As we all know, Thomas is enamored with bright, shiny, and powerful things—especially those that let him jump realms.” Casius nodded. “Unfortunately… these talismans are embedded.” Silence fell. “They are bound to our nervous systems. Integrated into the host. There is only one way to remove them.”

However, it was enough to make those who were plagued with guilt feel unsettled. I learned later on that Layla's mother was asking around for information and knowledge about spirits and entities. So, I arranged for someone to give her a talisman. The talisman was coated with a special substance. A person would begin hallucinating if they carried the talisman with them over an extended period. I was hoping Layla's mother would have trouble going to sleep because of the talisman's effects. Perhaps the heavens had learned of what happened to Hazel or Layla's mother had committed way too many sins. She actually let slip their secrets during Layla's livestream!

I felt slightly relieved until Asriel added, "Of course, I could be wrong about that. You see, we know how the jades were supposed to work, but no one filled them with the essence for decades. I once heard that to fuel the jades one would need a special talisman that amplifies magical abilities. The witch or warlock places the core's magic temporarily in the talisman, and then the essence is poured into the stone. The talisman works like a safe vessel. It catalyzes the ritual." I needed a few seconds to process his words. "So... could they have this talisman?" Asriel's lips formed a crooked smile. "Well, that's the good news. No one has ever confirmed that the talisman existed, and unless th

Then again, more recently, when the last of the storm-born were extinguished. But this… this was different. “She’s returned,” the Seer breathed, her voice a rasp of crumbling stone. “Or... been reborn.” She reached for her scrying basin—water so dark it reflected no light, no stars. Her gnarled fingers dipped into it, stirring the liquid until images swirled into form. A silver-haired wolf. A girl cloaked in lightning. A woman of flame. And the mark—the unmistakable sigil of the cursed bloodline—glowing along Talia’s spine like a brand.

" She held up her wrist, showcasing a sparkling green bracelet. Then, she smirked, pointing at the simple bracelet on my wrist. "Do you really think Ethan bought that especially for you? It's just a freebie that came with mine. You're only fit for my hand-me-downs!" I glanced down at my bracelet. It was a birthday gift from Ethan a few months ago, and I had always treasured it even though it was not expensive. Yet, it had unexpectedly become Mandy's tool for humiliation, a weapon to wound me.
