The silver doors at the end of the hall slid open. Ryan Carter stepped through. He was whole again. Or at least, the machine part of him was. His carbon-fiber limbs were gone, replaced by white, bio-synthetic flesh that looked too perfect to be real. His violet eye was gone, replaced by his original amber—but the light behind it was wrong. It was calibrated. He didn't walk like a wolf. He moved like a cursor on a screen. “Phoenix,” Ryan said. His voice was no longer a synthesized rasp; it was the warm, rational hum I had loved in New York. The sound hit me like a silver bullet to the heart.

With any luck, it would land in a spot that would slow him down enough to give her an opportunity to unhobble her horse and race away. Luck was on her side as the blade struck the cyborg in the center of his neck. The sounds of his gasping for air as he tugged at the thick steel to remove it spurred her into action. Her head whirled from left to right in search of his companions while she rushed to her horse. Olga had successfully kept them isolated and protected from much of the harshness of the world while living in that cave, so she knew even less about cyborgs than she did zombies. She’d heard it mentioned in conversations between Olga and Rex -who were both far worldlier than she was-

If people outside the clan were to cultivate this and if they were careless, they might have a psychotic break. Robin was a talented genius. "You are not my son. You are a monster. You don't deserve to live, you deserve to die. I won't let you do anything again. I'm going down with you, I'll warn Kevin and everyone about you. You are a betrayal." Robin paced around the room while his mother ranted. His eyes caught the syringe the doctor prescribed to be given to Annabelle. He picked it up, he looked back at her. She was trying to get out of bed. He took the syringe and stabbed her with it. "Robin... You're evil. You're not going to make it. I promise you... That." She fell on the ground. Robin sighed in relief. He took the remaining dose and poured it in her mouth. He carried her back to the bed.
