Novel & Cerita D Gray Man

So I was looking for 'D.Gray-man' myself a few months ago. It was confusing because different seasons are on different services now. The original series, the first 103 episodes, are available on Crunchyroll in a lot of regions, which is great for the classic experience.

But 'D.Gray-man Hallow', the 2016 continuation, is a bit trickier. Last I checked, it's exclusively on Funimation's streaming library, though with the Crunchyroll-Funimation merger stuff, I'm never sure what's moving where. I'd check both to be safe. Honestly, the licensing for older series like this feels like a moving target sometimes. I had to use a VPN once to watch a particular arc when I was traveling.

I slogged through the original anime ending years ago, and it was a mess. They had to make something up because they caught up to the manga, and you can feel the desperation. It wraps up with the Earl being defeated in this weird, anti-climactic way, and a bunch of character arcs just get truncated or forgotten. Allen's whole thing with his innocence and the 14th? Barely touched on. The manga, once I finally read it, was a whole different universe of complexity.

That original anime conclusion feels like a rough draft compared to where the story actually goes. The manga dives so much deeper into the Noah Family, the Heart, the Millennium Earl's true nature. Characters like Alma Karma and the Fourteenth have way more impactful and tragic backstories that the anime never even hinted at. The art evolution in the manga is stunning too; Hoshino's later spreads are just gorgeous, full of intricate detail and haunting imagery that the old animation couldn't capture.

Honestly, watching the anime finale now feels like getting a spoiler for a story that doesn't exist. 'Halloween' and the current arc are so far beyond anything animated. I'd say the anime is a decent introduction to the atmosphere and characters, but the real meal is in the pages. You haven't really experienced 'D.Gray-man' until you've read it.

Well, I can’t lie, the ending of 'D.Gray-man' left me scratching my head for days, and honestly I’m still not 100% sure I have it all straight. From what I pieced together, Allen Walker’s fate is...messy, unresolved in a lot of ways but also kind of poetically fitting? His body is taken over by Apocryphos after the final battle, basically forcing him into this state of stasis to prevent the Heart of Innocence from destroying the world. So Allen isn’t dead, but he’s not exactly living either—he’s sealed away, a sacrifice to maintain balance.

What really got me was the last few panels with Nea’s memories fully surfacing. It feels like Allen’s own identity is this battleground between the boy he was, the Noah he’s meant to be, and the weapon he became. The series stops with him suspended, and we don’t see a clear 'he lived happily ever after' moment. It’s bittersweet. He saved everyone, but at the cost of himself, which is very on-brand for his character. I keep hoping for some extra chapter or hint about whether that seal can ever be broken.
