Chapter 7

Author: Lunar Flame
Joseph met Bernard's scrutinizing gaze and said, "It's genuine. I didn't believe this was the truth, either, so I did a few more paternity tests with different labs. But the results… they didn't change."

Bernard didn't speak right away. He just stared at Joseph, his eyes sharp and probing.

A bitter, helpless look crossed Joseph's face. "I already showed Cora the results."

"Oh? You told her? And then?" Bernard asked.

"Yeah, I told her, but I don't know what's going through her head. She refuses to accept a scientific conclusion, nor does she admit that she cheated. She won't come clean to me and won't be reasonable. I haven't made this public, Dad. Right now, only the three of us know. I'm hoping we can settle this peacefully."

"This isn't a small matter. You did the right thing by not making a scene. Still, this really came out of nowhere, and I wasn't mentally prepared for it. As her father, I trust Cora's character. She would never…"

Of course. Like father, like daughter. Obviously, they were on the same team.

Joseph felt himself getting anxious. "You don't know what Cora has—"

He wanted to say that Selena and Kimberly weren't his, either, but then a thought flashed through his mind. What if Bernard already knew what Cora had done? What if he was only playing along to keep Joseph from blowing up?

He changed tack. "What's done is done. I just want to know the truth. Who is Natalie's real father? There's no way Cora didn't know she was pregnant with another man's baby, so why didn't she end up with him? Why did she choose me instead? And if she chose me, why did she hide this from me? Do you know anything, Dad?"

"I don't. I'll have her come here to give us an explanation," Bernard said.

As he listened to Joseph, the calm, unshakable look he'd worn slowly faded. Confusion crept into his expression. In the end, he called Cora and told her to come home immediately.

While they waited, he asked Joseph a few technical questions about the paternity test. When he heard the latter answer professionally, he suddenly remembered that Joseph was a doctor with over a decade of experience. If he was putting the paternity test results on the table, that basically confirmed that Natalie wasn't his child.

Bernard also called Helen and told her to hurry home.

Cora rushed into the house. She was a little surprised and confused to see Joseph there, but she thought it was a good thing. She could use her parents' authority to pressure him into coming home.

However, when Bernard handed her the paternity report and told her to explain herself, her mind went blank. She immediately turned a sharp, furious gaze on Joseph. "What is this? You can talk to me directly if you're upset with me. Why did you run to my parents to complain about me? What are you trying to pull?"

Joseph didn't back down. "Explain what's in that report."

Cora tore the paternity report to shreds. "There's nothing to explain because Natalie is your daughter! You're trying to use this nonsense to slander me and get what you want, but I'm not letting you!"

She turned to Bernard. "Dad, do you know what he's doing? He wants to use this fake report to divorce me and make me pay him 1.6 billion dollars. He's no saint for making such an outrageous demand!"

Bernard immediately fixed a razor-sharp glare on Joseph. "Is that your real motive?"

Joseph hadn't expected Cora to turn this on him like this—she made him look like some greedy, money-hungry jerk!

But after a moment of thought, he decided to own up to it. "That's right. Cora, I want a divorce, and you're going to pay me. If you'd signed the divorce papers yesterday, it would've been 1.6 billion dollars. But now, I want more."

"You scum!" Bernard exploded with rage and punched Joseph hard across the face. He raised his fist to hit Joseph again when the latter didn't fight back, but Cora ran over and stopped him.

She hadn't expected Bernard to actually hit Joseph. She hastily said to Joseph, "Just apologize. Apologize to my dad and me, and get his forgiveness. You're not allowed to make him this mad again from now on…"

Joseph let out a dark, humorless laugh. He could taste blood where his gums had split. He rolled his tongue against the wound, then spat a mouthful of blood onto the floor.

"I didn't do anything wrong. Why should I apologize? This marriage is ending today, Cora!"

"I'll kill you, you ingrate!" Bernard lunged at Joseph again, looking furious.

At that moment, Helen came through the door. She gasped in shock when she saw what was happening. "Hey! Bernard, what are you doing? Stop it, now!"

Besides, Joseph was holding a large sum of Skylar and Yara's money. If he were to switch sides, they would be in serious trouble. She needed to keep Joseph on her side. Joseph would never believe anything Yara told him, but all he said was, "Does Skylar have any other children besides those eight kids?""Yes." Yara studied Joseph's expression again and noticed he seemed perfectly calm. She suspected he might know more than he was letting on.Since Joseph already knew about Skylar's eight children with Tessa, Yara figured she might as well tell him about the others. Yara asked, "Could you tell me why you're asking all this?""His lover came to me and asked me to let her see Skylar. Of course. She wanted some money so she could support their children.""How much did she ask for? If it's not a lot, just give it to her. They're my brother's children. That makes them our family.""Money is not the problem. It's about trust. I need to know the truth and what's really going on. "I'

Enraged, Joseph returned to the hospital room and stared at the unconscious Skylar. He really wished he could take out his scalpel and cut off his head.In the end, Joseph's rational side won out.Harry and the other doctor entered the room. Anyone who didn't know any better would have thought Joseph was devastated over what happened to Skylar. They kept telling him not to take it so hard. Seriously? More like Joseph wanted to kill Skylar. Joseph was in a bad mood. When he got to Yara's room, he just stood there and stared at her in silence. The way Joseph was staring at Yara was starting to creep her out. She thought he was still upset about what had happened, so she asked hesitantly, "Henry, what's up with you? You look like you're about to bite my head off."Joseph did not respond. He kept staring at her like a cop sizing up a suspect. She grew even more nervous and asked, "You still don't believe me? Joseph didn't do anything to me. "You already examined me yourself. I'

Joseph was back to his usual cheeky self, which suited his current identity. He had learned from Tessa that Skylar never brought her or the children back to Emerald Mountain. She didn't even know who Edward was.Clearly, Skylar had kept his family's secrets from her. As far as she knew, he was just a wealthy CEO of a public company."I'll have someone contact you. All you have to do is transfer the money.""Sure!" Joseph thought to himself. That was if Skylar could even get in touch with anyone else. Joseph continued, "You still haven't answered my question. How many children do you have out there? You have three daughters with Cora and eight other children with Tessa. That's already enough to form a soccer team.""What's that got to do with you? Once I'm discharged from the hospital, you'll find out what you need to know. For now, this is my private business."Skylar had no intention of telling Joseph who his lovers were. He was afraid Joseph would track them down and seduce

  • A Man with Nerves of Steel   Chapter 711

Skylar was currently unconscious, so the woman had come all the way for nothing. Joseph turned down her request to see Yara and suggested going to her house instead. The woman took him there. When she saw that he had even brought presents for her children, she realized how thoughtful he was. She immediately liked him a lot more.Joseph knew where the woman lived. It was Kingsley Estate. She lived in a small villa, while Rosalie lived in a high-rise apartment in a quieter part of the area.Skylar had purchased two adjoining units. The woman had almost 3,229 square feet all to herself. It made sense. After all, they had so many children, and there were two other nannies too. The oldest children were twins. They were attending an elementary school nearby and were even in the same class as Brooke. The first set of triplets were in their last year of preschool, and the youngest set of triplets were only two years old.All eight children were incredibly adorable. After all, Skylar

Joseph also saw the final name list and noticed that Harold and Pamela had been included as well.Clearly, the Zahns were still hoping they could save Harold. And with Pamela's longstanding ties to the Zahn medical sect, she still had people looking out for her.The medical team going with them included Jenna, Gemma, and three other men. They had already taken care of their visas and other paperwork, so they could leave at any time. Still, was medical treatment overseas really that effective?Joseph let out a quiet scoff. He wasn't one to put foreign expertise on a pedestal, but he wasn't so arrogant as to think he knew everything either. He didn't want anyone to find out what he had done, so he checked on Reuben and the others himself. He still took the necessary precautions to cover his tracks.Joseph left Yara alone so she could recover. She would take care of what he had asked her to do later. In the evening, he saw a woman pacing back and forth in the hallway. From time

  • A Man with Nerves of Steel   Chapter 709

Joseph thought, "Like hell anyone would believe you!"He knew exactly which parts of Yara's statements were lies. He asked a few more questions. And when she kept glossing over the important parts, he became even more certain that when the time came, Yara would choose to kill Skylar with her own hands.Joseph took Yara back to the hospital that very night. He played it off as needing to get her checked out to make sure "Joseph" hadn't done anything shady to her.In reality, he just wanted her to receive proper treatment at the hospital so that she'd heal up properly for the next phase of his plan. After daybreak, Joseph came in with her test results. Playing the part of the devoted fiance, he happily pulled Yara into a hug and kissed her.Yara kissed him back, but her movements were noticeably stiffer than before. She desperately tried to keep her desires in check, since she couldn't give herself to Henry and had to save herself for Joseph. She told herself it was just to get the

Joseph was prepared for this and met Cora's gaze head-on. "Cora, you're now the richest person in Jenton. Your net worth is what, 80 billion dollars? And that's even a conservative guess. I'm not going to make some ridiculous demand to split everything equally. That money isn't mine, and I didn't ea

Cora had once been the number-one beauty in Jenton. Even now, at 40 years old, she was still stunning. Thanks to her good maintenance routine and a pampered lifestyle, there was no trace of age on her face—she looked like she was 28 at most. Her age only added a touch of mature charm to her.She wa
