Chapter 7

Author: Lunar Flame
Joseph met Bernard's scrutinizing gaze and said, "It's genuine. I didn't believe this was the truth, either, so I did a few more paternity tests with different labs. But the results… they didn't change."

Bernard didn't speak right away. He just stared at Joseph, his eyes sharp and probing.

A bitter, helpless look crossed Joseph's face. "I already showed Cora the results."

"Oh? You told her? And then?" Bernard asked.

"Yeah, I told her, but I don't know what's going through her head. She refuses to accept a scientific conclusion, nor does she admit that she cheated. She won't come clean to me and won't be reasonable. I haven't made this public, Dad. Right now, only the three of us know. I'm hoping we can settle this peacefully."

"This isn't a small matter. You did the right thing by not making a scene. Still, this really came out of nowhere, and I wasn't mentally prepared for it. As her father, I trust Cora's character. She would never…"

Of course. Like father, like daughter. Obviously, they were on the same team.

Joseph felt himself getting anxious. "You don't know what Cora has—"

He wanted to say that Selena and Kimberly weren't his, either, but then a thought flashed through his mind. What if Bernard already knew what Cora had done? What if he was only playing along to keep Joseph from blowing up?

He changed tack. "What's done is done. I just want to know the truth. Who is Natalie's real father? There's no way Cora didn't know she was pregnant with another man's baby, so why didn't she end up with him? Why did she choose me instead? And if she chose me, why did she hide this from me? Do you know anything, Dad?"

"I don't. I'll have her come here to give us an explanation," Bernard said.

As he listened to Joseph, the calm, unshakable look he'd worn slowly faded. Confusion crept into his expression. In the end, he called Cora and told her to come home immediately.

While they waited, he asked Joseph a few technical questions about the paternity test. When he heard the latter answer professionally, he suddenly remembered that Joseph was a doctor with over a decade of experience. If he was putting the paternity test results on the table, that basically confirmed that Natalie wasn't his child.

Bernard also called Helen and told her to hurry home.

Cora rushed into the house. She was a little surprised and confused to see Joseph there, but she thought it was a good thing. She could use her parents' authority to pressure him into coming home.

However, when Bernard handed her the paternity report and told her to explain herself, her mind went blank. She immediately turned a sharp, furious gaze on Joseph. "What is this? You can talk to me directly if you're upset with me. Why did you run to my parents to complain about me? What are you trying to pull?"

Joseph didn't back down. "Explain what's in that report."

Cora tore the paternity report to shreds. "There's nothing to explain because Natalie is your daughter! You're trying to use this nonsense to slander me and get what you want, but I'm not letting you!"

She turned to Bernard. "Dad, do you know what he's doing? He wants to use this fake report to divorce me and make me pay him 1.6 billion dollars. He's no saint for making such an outrageous demand!"

Bernard immediately fixed a razor-sharp glare on Joseph. "Is that your real motive?"

Joseph hadn't expected Cora to turn this on him like this—she made him look like some greedy, money-hungry jerk!

But after a moment of thought, he decided to own up to it. "That's right. Cora, I want a divorce, and you're going to pay me. If you'd signed the divorce papers yesterday, it would've been 1.6 billion dollars. But now, I want more."

"You scum!" Bernard exploded with rage and punched Joseph hard across the face. He raised his fist to hit Joseph again when the latter didn't fight back, but Cora ran over and stopped him.

She hadn't expected Bernard to actually hit Joseph. She hastily said to Joseph, "Just apologize. Apologize to my dad and me, and get his forgiveness. You're not allowed to make him this mad again from now on…"

Joseph let out a dark, humorless laugh. He could taste blood where his gums had split. He rolled his tongue against the wound, then spat a mouthful of blood onto the floor.

"I didn't do anything wrong. Why should I apologize? This marriage is ending today, Cora!"

"I'll kill you, you ingrate!" Bernard lunged at Joseph again, looking furious.

At that moment, Helen came through the door. She gasped in shock when she saw what was happening. "Hey! Bernard, what are you doing? Stop it, now!"

Joseph mused on the sudden change in Cora's plans, struggling to make sense of it. He couldn't fathom why she would abandon her so-called business trip—a trip he knew was merely a cover to spend time with her lover. It made no sense. Had she truly given up, or was this just a calculated delay, a way for her to stall until she could make her next move? However, his skepticism didn't stop her from following through. Not only did Cora skip her business trip, but she actually accompanied him on a fishing excursion. And unlike the past, she didn't seem bored; with a barbecue set up, she stayed by his side for the entire two days he spent by the water. Over that weekend, she even took him to a private spa for massages. It was one of the businesses under Lowell Group and was open exclusively to women. If it weren't for his relationship with Cora, there was no way he could have entered the premises. Cora asked for a room for two. Together, they enjoyed professional massages and spa treatm

"Dr. Geller, how's the investigation going? Did you find anything?" Joseph called up Arthur."It was a computer technician's error. We've already let that staff member go. To avoid causing alarm, we've already wrapped up the investigation.""Oh. Did you find out who was behind this?""Based on our investigation, no one was behind this. It was just a staff error. Dr. Hart, the patient's family raised no objections to our investigation results. The case is now closed."After the call ended, Joseph grew more confused. He became more convinced that there was more to the story.Joseph pulled out Lionel's medical history records and went through them again. He realized the information wasn't complete, so he went back to the hospital. He used Lionel's checkup as a pretext to request more medical records. Once he was home, he went through everything for another two hours. Finally, he spotted something unusual in a subtle detail in the data. Lionel's condition had taken a sharp turn fo

When Cora returned home that night, she burst into the study room without knocking and questioned Joseph sharply, "Why did you reach out to someone like Bobby Baker?"Don't you know what the Bakers do? You've got a clean record. Don't get involved in all this stuff."Joseph knew that even if Fiona kept this a secret, the housekeeper would still follow him. He wasn't even surprised that Cora knew his whereabouts. "You knew I went looking for Bobby, but do you even know why?""You operated on Lionel Baker. Otherwise, you'd never get involved with them. Of course, if this is just a doctor-patient matter that could be handled at the hospital, I won't pursue it any further."But this time, you took the initiative to seek them out. I'm afraid you're going down the wrong path.""There was a problem with Lionel Baker's CT scan. Were you behind this?" Joseph decided to be upfront about it."Of course not. If I hadn't found out about it afterward, I would never have known that something

The people Joseph had Fiona look into were the patient from earlier, Lionel Baker, and his family. She worked very fast. It wasn't long before she forwarded details on his background.Joseph glanced through it. Lionel sure had a large family, and the number matched the relatives who came to the hospital. Still, it was all just basic background information that wasn't of much use. Joseph then called Fiona again."Fiona, are you messing with me? What's the use of all this information? What I want is the Baker family's notable actions and history. I want to know their core strengths as well. Be as specific as possible.""What on earth are you up to?""How did the Bakers build their wealth? Do they have anything to do with the Lowells? If so, what's the situation like?""I… Why do you need to know all this?""What do you think I can even do? Nothing at all. I just want to figure things out. Don't worry about why I need all this information. "Just tell me what's going on, and you'

With a bit of luck and Lady Luck smiling on him, Joseph successfully performed the surgery. A thorough postoperative examination confirmed that all of the lesions had been removed. Since the patient's vital signs were stable, the surgery was considered a resounding success. "Dr. Hart, good thing you're so good at your job. It was a close call, but it all worked out in the end. I'm so grateful to you." Arthur congratulated Joseph. Arthur took off his surgical cap and mask, revealing hair damp with sweat. He hadn't been the lead surgeon, so the sweat was clearly due to nerves.Still shaken, Joseph did not take credit for the success and shared it with Arthur and the rest of the medical team. Together, they went to update the patient's family on the outcome.Joseph stayed at the hospital for lunch. By evening, the patient had come to and was in good condition, which further confirmed that the surgery was a success. Before leaving, Joseph approached Arthur and spoke frankly. "I th

Joseph had no idea what happened at Jenton Girls' School. One day, the Traditional Medicine Center reached out to Joseph again, requesting his assistance for a surgical procedure. After reviewing the patient's case files, Joseph noted that while the operation was complicated, it still fell well within his technical capabilities. So, he agreed to help. The patient was an elderly man suffering from cardiopulmonary failure. The family had intended to transfer him to Jenton University Hospital to have Walt perform the surgery. However, following the string of scandals that had recently plagued the Jenton University Hospital, the family had grown skeptical.Inside the consultation room, Joseph asked, "Dr. Geller and Dr. Albright, this marks my third time performing surgery in your hospital. Would the physicians here resent an outsider like me?"Joseph decided to be humble as he wasn't officially part of the Traditional Medicine Center. The other doctors might resent how often he was
