But I could see the look in their eyes. It wasn't bewilderment from seeing something odd, it was because they admired what Damien was doing for me.

The man thrashed, tried to crawl, but Torren was already on top of him—snapping bones, cracking ribs, and severing tendons. There was no clean kill. There was no mercy. There was only the sound of justice rendered the old way—by fang and claw and the kind of rage that left nothing behind but meat and ruin. Damon didn’t cry. He didn’t scream. He just watched in silence, and he was still. And when the man’s body finally stopped moving—what was left of it, anyway—Torren turned his head toward the boy. And whimpered. Like a wolf greeting its pup for the first time.

Damien’s shadow fell over me as he crouched slightly, his voice low enough for only me to hear. “Don’t look, little flame,” he murmured, the words gentle despite the tension in his tone. “You don’t need to see this.” The trapdoors fell with a sickening thud. My father, my mother, my brother—gone. A scream tore from my throat, raw and uncontrollable. I collapsed to the ground, my legs giving out beneath me. I didn’t need to see it; the sound alone was enough to shatter what was left of my heart.
