The Romano retaliation was louder than expected, and every night the circle felt like it was tightening around me.
Still, through the silence, I heard her voice.
Tamara’s laugh drifted in faintly from down the hall. It wasn’t loud, not the kind of laugh that shook the walls, but it was soft, careful, like she was giving just enough to make the sound convincing.
