We stared into each other’s eyes, the world fading until it was just the two of us. Damien smiled—a soft, genuine smile that melted away some of my fears. He leaned in, his lips hovering just above mine, and I could feel the promise of a kiss in the air. But before his lips could touch mine, the world shifted. The comforting warmth of his presence evaporated, and I was yanked back into the cold, unrelenting reality. I gasped, clutching my chest as I tried to steady my racing heart.
