“You didn’t answer my question. What are you doing here?” Daniel lowered his voice and took a step closer after peering over his shoulder to check for prying eyes. “I don’t have much time. Elijah… he’s planning something big. And I’m done being his puppet.” Elijah's name was like gasoline when it was said. I clenched my jaw. "I know, You think I'll trust you? after all of you have done?” There was a glimmer of desperation in Daniel's eyes, but his countenance tightened. "I came here not to ask for forgiveness. This is what I came to give you.”

Daniel said Daniel is speaking to everyone his speech is a live conference where all soldiers and the leaders were watching. “We will stand proudly today! We will never go back again to that shadows! Daniel looked around like he was only now noticing the guards shifting their weight, hands near their radios, waiting. His jaw worked as if he wanted to spit more poison but realized he couldn’t do it safely here. He looked back at me, eyes burning. “This isn’t over,” he said, voice shaking with fury. “Do you hear me? This isn’t over.” I held his stare, refusing to shrink. “Then don’t blink,” I said quietly. “Because neither is mine.” Daniel’s chest heaved. Then he turned sharply, storming back toward the gate like he could outrun humiliation.

Then he settled back against Tim’s side and looked at the room in front of them, the lamp in the corner and the bookshelf and the window with its dark rectangle of night and Tim’s copy of Gibbon on the side table waiting to be finished. “Don’t let your empire fall,” Daniel said. “I won’t,” Tim said. “Good,” Daniel said. The room was quiet. The house breathed. Outside the night continued. And tomorrow would bring what it brought and the end of the week would arrive when it arrived and Solomon Black would come when he came and all of that was real and present and waiting. But right now it was Thursday evening and Daniel was warm and Tim was beside him and the laughter from earlier was still so

Daniel stepped backward letting Nathan fall to the ground. “I’ll help you up to your feet because you’re my brother and I love you being alive rather than being dead” Daniel chuckled as he raised Nathan to his feet, letting him sit on the bed.
