Danny said nothing for a long time. The drain in the center of the floor sat in the periphery of his vision. He did not look at it. He looked at Dollar Fabs, the man who had been a ghost and a target for nine years, who had turned out to be something more complicated and less satisfying than either of those things. I said in my altered voice. "Sexy Red, hi," Danny said, and something in his tone made my stomach drop. "Hi," I responded carefully. "I thought about everything you said," Danny continued, his voice oddly calm. "And there's something important I need to tell you. Can we meet? Just briefly. In the next ten minutes. This is very important."

“Danny.” “Took you long enough,” his tone mocking her. “But how? You only shift into animals.” Danny’s grin widened, a flash of triumph in his eyes. “Ah, little Goddess, you really do surprise me sometimes. Shifting into animals is only the beginning. I’ve been practicing… learning to become others.” He leaned closer, voice low and menacing. “Maximus was perfect—people trust him, so no one questioned it. No one suspected a thing.” Jaiyana pressed back against the cold bars, her mind racing. Her heart pounded, but her fear was sharpening into clarity. “You… you’ve been here all along, hiding in plain sight?”

Kade gave me a knowing smirk before speaking. “Well, Machine and I need your help looking into some items for Ricci Enterprises.” My heart skipped a beat. This was why I was here. “No problem, what can I help with?” “There has been some interference with Ricci’s security system and we need you to help us uncover who it was. We have reason to believe that Phantom is responsible for said interference. We need your help identifying Phantom.” Fuck! This couldn’t be happening. “No problem!” I gave a reassuring smile. Covering the sheer panic I felt inside.

“The explosion flattened that entire compound. You saw it yourself. No one could’ve walked away from that. Phantom’s dead. All we’ve got left is Dennis.” I shook my head firmly. “I don’t believe that. A man like Phantom doesn’t just… vanish in rubble. He plans. He hides. He taunts. He survives.” Abel tilted his head, studying me like I was the stubborn one. “That’s your anger talking. He’s dead. You need to let yourself believe that or it’s going to eat you alive.”

Or that my initial suspicion about him as my phantom was indeed correct. “I’m going to meet Damon tonight,” I said, and if my phantom will not show up while I am with Damon, then it could lend credence to my theory. Nancy nodded and then stood up. “Alright. Good luck with that and please be safe. I just came here to check on you, and I’m glad I did.” “Thank you.” With that, she left my office, but not without blowing me a kiss and wink before she closes the door. ****

Transforming back to monstrosity, I howled as a go signal and we dashed forward, determine to win this battle. Dana leaped towards me and we both collided in the air before landing back to the surface in a split second. Our pack tried their best to push back our enemies as Gwen and Cayde ran ahead of us along with Enzo. As the light slowly travelled away from us, I looked over my shoulder, seeing Dana with a smirk on her face, one of her arms was partially shifted into a monstrous form. I gritted my teeth when I realized that she managed to scratch me on my shoulder. But that confirmed it, she was no hybrid but she was stronger than any of her underlings. That was expected of the foundation

Either Danny’s spiral was so impulsive he wasn’t taking the time to consider the blatant crumbs left in his wake, or worse, those crumbs had been laid with a deliberate hand.
