All around her swirled visions—of her life, of others' lives, of the distant past and the near future.
Then, he appeared.

Or what remained of him.
His body looked human, tall and regal in an ancient robe of shadow silk, but half of his face was cracked stone, bleeding starlight. His eyes glowed with eldritch power, and black veins pulsed across his skin like a spiderweb.
But what chilled Ava was his smile.
It was sad.
"You look just like her," he said. "Your mother."
Ava summoned her magic but it fizzled. "Stay back."
