Chapter 8 I kept my glowing hand pressed to the rubble and called his name again. On the other side of the collapse I heard stone grinding, claws scraping, and Drake’s low, furious growls. He was tearing the barrier apart with nothing but strength and desperation. “I’m here,” I shouted once more. “I’m all right.”

I slammed my hands into the dirt and screamed. The crevice that opened this time swallowed half the valley. And everything went dark. Everything went black for what felt like forever. The ground under my hands was still shaking when the darkness finally lifted. Dust and dirt hung thick in the air like smoke after a fire. I coughed hard, tasting blood and earth, and pushed myself up on shaking arms. My scales burned across my chest and both arms now, silver and black and way too much. The crevice I'd ripped open stretched wide across the valley floor, a jagged scar that swallowed trees, wolves, and half the battlefield in one greedy bite.

She was rushing straight at me. Bang! The bottle smashed brutally against my head. The sickening crunch of exploding glass erupted in my ears, followed instantly by the hot, sticky sensation of blood trickling down my temple. “Sylvia!” Maggie’s piercing scream tore through the club. I stumbled backward, my vision swimming, only to see Silvia raising another bottle high above my head, her face twisted in pure madness. “Go to hell!” When the second blow came down, the world went completely black.
