When the wind swept through the towers and around the towering spire, it produced a low, mournful howl that echoed across the fortress, making the castle feel less like a royal residence and more like an ancient, haunted mansion. Estelle stepped forward. Her hair danced violently behind her. She turned towards the side, and saw the entire city stretched beneath them. It looked peaceful as other times. The heavy main door of Caden's mansion clicked shut behind me. The sound didn't offer freedom; it sealed me into a new kind of prison. The bright afternoon sun felt too harsh, mocking the darkness that had just settled deep inside me. I was outside, yes, but no longer my own. The air felt thick, heavy with the weight of the deal. My limbs felt weak, like every bone had turned to water. I had agreed. I had sold myself, not just for money now, but for Caden’s sinister game.

But none of them mattered. Today, I had a client. I reached the basement door, pushed it open, and locked it behind me with a firm click. And the city lights flickered far below them, unaware that a storm had just begun. The next morning, sunlight peeked through the dusty curtains of Room 3. Natalie stretched as she sat up on the bed, the black spellbook lying safely beside her, hidden under her pillow. Miguel was already awake, checking through the bag they packed last night. Cielo yawned as she fixed her messy hair. Natalie stood up and tied her hair into a quick ponytail. She turned toward the door and said, "Time to get more money." She stepped out of the room and walked down the creaky stairs to the motel front desk. The manager was still there, his face pale, eyes dull, still under her control.

The edges ragged and jagged tears bit into the words. Lloyd peered close, the rips making it a bit harder to read, as well as the uneven script, written by a hand that had been shaking. The sun is bright. But all around us is darkness. I could have all the gold in the world. The hidden locations are wide open. But the cost is crippling. I had much of it tossed over the side. The weeds can conceal it and the drowned men can have use of it. The beast knows I came close to finding some way out. And the consequence was worse. Their souls, my own and the blood of children. It won't be sated until a hundred or maybe more have been slaughtered.
