She must be with her best friend, Tawny. Unfortunately, my sleep is not very restful. This time I don’t dream about a gorgeous man with beautiful golden hair and rich amber eyes. No, it’s the same nightmare as before. This time I’m not in my bed. I’m out on the street, and I’m running from the glowing mist. I dream of it catching me and clawing me until my body is nearly in shreds. Even in sleep, I can feel the life draining out of me. I look at my dying body to see my lifeblood being drained. Terror and fascination fuse in my mind as I watch my blood turn into a pulsating red and black light while it streams out of my body. she whispered quietly as she looked around the room. The curiosity and concern overwhelmed me as I looked at my longtime friend. I leaned in close to her and asked just as quietly, “What is it?” “Well,” she began taking another look around the room before continuing. “I have been having dreams as well but not of Laylan, or unicorns, or fairies, or anything like that. I always thought that maybe I just had multiple personalities and the other happened to be a man named Daemon. But recently, I have been dreaming dreams as if they were his memories or something,” she stopped and looked at me.

A blanket or quilt maybe—I hope. She turned her head, ignoring the dizzy feeling movement created, and tried to see anything. This is the darkest space I’ve ever been in. She turned and lowered her other leg off the cot. Inhaling deeply, she tried to identify the smells. It was a damp mustiness, but earthy, as well, and not in a good way. Her stomach clenched at the offensive scent. Grimacing, she leaned down until her fingertips touched the floor beside her foot. It was dirt. Cold and damp dirt.

I got up and made to walk to the door, but dark spots began to dance in front of my eyes and I felt terribly weak and dizzy. I tried calling out, but no words issued forth from my lips. My throat was clogged up and my mouth felt dry and heavy. I knew I was going to die, and I regretted so many things in an instant. I saw my life flash before me. The betrayal of my wife with my cousin, and the regret that I wouldn't be able to do anything to find my mother. I fell to the ground and the golden staff slipped from my hands. My vision began dimming rapidly, and I blinked back tears from my eyes.

I couldn’t wipe the grin off my face as the warm spray of the shower rained down on me. My whole body felt alive, buzzing with nervous excitement, like I had butterflies fluttering in my stomach that refused to settle. Tonight wasn’t just any night—it was the night. Caitlyn awoke with a start, her heart racing and her breath sharp in her chest. The remnants of the dream clung to her like a fog she couldn’t shake. In the darkness of her mind, flashes of an ancient, buried temple had danced before her eyes. She saw a chained wolf, its eyes glowing with a deep, unnerving hunger, surrounded by an endless blackness. And then, her own reflection—a version of herself that wasn’t quite right—whispering, “It’s not over.”

I’m not sure if this is all in my head. My dreams feel happy. And once I wake up, I feel like something is missing from my reality. It feels dangerous to want my dreams more than my real life. I’m fantasizing about my fantasy life, my dream world that I keep visiting. Lately I seem to be taken to the same place each night. One with wolves, lakes, and trees. Forests so dense they should be spooky but they are full of comfort. Night skies and full moons. The scent of pine and oak. The feel of crisp air on my skin.

I hear the trees around me start to crack and a loud roar; there is something big barrelling right at me but it’s too dark to see. I close my eyes and focus trying to ready myself for anything. I wake up drenched in sweat, it was only a dream. Sometimes witches have dreams of the future. I hope this was not mine. The sun is beginning rise. After that dream I am no longer tired and I head down to the beach to get the water. The water inside the pot has turned to a black sludge. There must be something evil on the beach and it has made it very clear it doesn’t want us here.
