Specks of snow settled against Lucinda’s olive skin as she gazed at the sky and repeated the words that didn’t make any sense to Mara. Growing more worried by the second, Mara approached her mother, hoping to snap her out of her trance. “Mother,” she repeated tentatively, reaching out a hand. When her fingers came into contact with her mother’s shoulder, Lucinda finally snapped her attention to Mara.

The hall trembled. But her body could not endure much more. The ancient power she had awakened strained her ribs and nerves. Every cell burned. Still she did not give in. Her vision blurred. The last thing she saw was the light inside her own chest, steady and unbroken. Her eyes closed. Her body went limp in the chains. And when she lost consciousness, it was not defeat that took her. As the light began to grow, I started to feel my body again, though every limb felt heavy, as though I had been asleep for a century. The light began to illuminate the whole place, swallowing the darkness that there once was, and I felt myself being broken free from the chains.

She doubted that some eleventh-hour miracle would save her tonight. Christophe reappeared and shed his toweling robe in an untidy heap on the floor.
