At some point, I had stopped having any expectations for Miles.
After the doctor left, I heard Miles slide down outside the door.
The caregiver, Debra, felt sorry for Miles. She quietly tried to persuade me.
“Ms. Sommers, your husband is outside crying. He looks so pitiful. He’s barely eaten in days. He’s so thin he doesn’t even look like himself anymore. Come on, you’re married. What problem can’t a husband and wife work out?
I looked at the trees outside the window and said flatly, “Debra, if it’s just a problem, then sure, we can always work it out. But if the feelings are gone, then even a small problem will break everything apart.”
