I wake up hungover and late. Maya is passed out on the other bed. We stumbled in at 3 AM. My phone says 11:42 AM. There are seventeen missed calls from Claire. Sound check was at 10. I'm screwed. I throw on clothes. Grab my camera. Run out the door. The venue is twenty minutes away. I get there in twelve. Backstage is chaos as usual. But there's a tension in the air that wasn't there before.

Two bodyguards materialized at his sides, flanking him as they whisked him through a private backstage entrance. I hurried after them, weaving through the crowd to keep pace. I hadn't expected backstage to be this chaotic—a blur of cables, clipboard-wielding runners, and monitors flickering with countdowns. A producer rushed over and thrust a stack of papers into Tarzan's hands. "These are the questions. You're live in ten." Tarzan gave a small, measured nod and settled into the chair before the makeup mirror. Immediately, an artist leaned in to touch up his complexion while a hairstylist fussed over the fall of his hair. He barely flinched, already scanning the pages with quiet intensity.

There’s a zombie brain of pasta meatballs, a freshly dug grave of meatloaf, and gray food-dyed potato mash. A man is setting down a bacon wrapped mummy, while some of the security guards set into a pasta bake kids pool day gone wrong. But none of that compares to the cake sitting there in the shadows. I can see a volcano and a few bottles of mentos and cola waiting… “What was that?” I say, swinging around as we get battered by wafting food aromas. “I was gonna tell him.” “I just panicked,” Dawn says, looking inside at the beginning of the dancefloor. “I saw how happy he was, and how chatty he’s been with everyone. What if we ruin that for him? What if it ruins everything for us?”

Zoe's eyes shifted. All of a sudden, she saw Jay appear, and he was surrounded by many cameras too. They were probably filming behind-the-scenes of the rehearsal. There was not much footage to offer here, though, given that she was all alone. "Where are Candice Lowe and Wynn Yaden?" the director asked. "They aren't free." "You're the only one rehearsing?" "I don't have anything else to do anyway," Zoe said with a smile. The director did not say anything further, and he led the camera crew away without a word.

Racks overflow with pieces from the collection. Crew members rush back and forth, headsets on, hands full. Colette signals to a few people, giving instructions before finally turning to me. She had arrived earlier, choosing to avoid the paparazzi frenzy of entering with me.

24. MONIQUE'S POV The drive to the headquarters is quick. When I reach a few of our team members are already on set, and it's crowded with unfamiliar faces I believe to be workers for the Soul magazine. I spot Desmond and Mr Moore sitting in a corner discussing. I can't spot Becca do I believe she's backstage getting the models ready. I wave James who's sitting with some men behind cameras and tripod stands and lots of other machines I don't know what it's called. Clark and Mr Davids are walking around, stopping at different set of people to put everything in place.

I blinked in confusion. “Guys,” I laughed tiredly, trying to wave them off, “it’s my last scene. You don’t have to keep doing all this.”
