JAX I wake up in a cold sweat, panting as my eyes adjust to the darkness of my room. All the talk lately about the shadow pack and strategizing how to align our defenses with Denver has been seeping into my nightmares, robbing me of sleep. I’m lucky in that I don’t have any personal experience with the shadow pack thus far, but in my nightmares Alpha Xavier is this larger-than-life villain, his followers these soulless, twisted monsters who kill without remorse. Then again, from what I’ve heard about the shadow pack, the version of them in my dreams may not be too far off.

He pinned Duncan flat against the stone floor, his massive brown paws slamming down onto Duncan’s shoulders, trapping the Supreme Alpha beneath his weight. Xavier’s jaws opened wide, thick lines of saliva dripping from his fangs as he snapped violently inches away from Duncan’s throat, trying to deliver the killing bite.

Dark Xavier (smirking): “They want you to be noble. But we know what power really costs.” Xavier (snarling): “You’re not me.” Dark Xavier: “I’m what happens when you stop pretending you can save both her and the world. When you decide the world isn’t worth her tears.” Xavier (tense): “You think I’d burn it all for her?” Dark Xavier: “You already would. All that’s left is for you to admit it.” A blade forms in Dark Xavier’s hand, shaped like the chained wolf. Xavier draws his own. They clash in blinding sparks. Blow for blow, fury for fury. At the climax, Xavier disarms his double and presses a dagger to its throat.
