The photo zooms out, and I catch the ceremonial proceedings taking place. “O MY GOD!” The remote clatters on the floor as my former boss reads my obituary. “WHAT DO YOU MEAN I’M DEAD?!” I shriek as I stare at the screen in disbelief. I’m standing right here alive and healthy. Why the hell does the world think I’m dead? “We did all we could, but we were still too late,” the boss finally says as he flips the next page. “The Russians still got us.”

In my panic and desperation, I found myself hugging the leg of what appeared to be their boss, clinging to him like a child to a parent. "Don't leave me here! I'm afraid of ghosts!" I cried out, my voice muffled against his leg. The sight of those bodies, the reality of violent death, had shattered what little composure I had left. In my traumatized state, the dead men seemed like they might rise at any moment, seeking revenge on the living. "Fuck," the man cursed, rubbing his temples in obvious irritation. I didn't let go of his leg, my grip tightening with my fear.

After four hours of reading and six cups of tea, I heard my older brother walk in. "Up as usual Squirt." "Morning Lee." Lee sat beside me and glanced at the books on the table. "You're gonna have a brain meltdown." "That's not a thing." "It is. The medical term is boring behavior." I rolled my eyes and hissed. Lee pulled out his tablet and began scrolling through. "Lil Dicky and Chris Brown just released a new song." I shrugged. "I don't care." Lee rolled his eyes and kept scrolling. " 'Man found dead in his wardrobe on Friday. Possible cause of death; strangulation' ."

Alive? As I sit up in bed, memories flood my mind like a tidal wave. I remembered the night I died, the feeling of the blade piercing my skin, the sound of Diane's voice whispering in my ear. I remembered the pain, the fear, the sense of betrayal. But I also remembered the moments leading up to that night, the laughter, the tears, the fights. I remembered the way Robert smiled at Diane, the way Diane looked at me with a mixture of envy and hatred. I remembered the way I felt, like I was walking on eggshells, never knowing when the other shoe would drop.

They were speaking, but words, sounds, nothing was coming through. One of them knelt in front of me. He took my face in both his hands. His lips were moving but it seems like I am listening to them from underwater. Maybe I died too. Drowned in my tears and joined Dad and Mom. Can you die from crying too much? Dehydrate yourself to the point of no return? I think that’s what happened to me.

Taking out the plain purple journal, I open it to the bookmarked page and glace at her name engraved on the stone once more before parting my lips to begin reading; Dear Sister Esther, Hi! Today makes it ten years since I heard you laugh, talk, or argue with dad. I have not been the same without you. You know the movie walking dead? I know you do. We watched season one together.
