A sob left my lips, relief filled my heart when his eyes fluttered open but my relief dissipated seeing his eyes. He yanked my hand away from his face and got up. "Maddox!" I try to get up. Damien POV The apartment was smaller than I'd expected, one room with a kitchenette and a bathroom barely big enough to turn around in, but the location was perfect because the bakery below provided cover and the narrow street meant we'd see anyone approaching long before they reached our door. I moved immediately to the window, checking sightlines and escape routes while Lilith explored the sparse space behind me. "There's food in the cabinets." She opened doors, taking inventory. "Canned goods mostly, some pasta, coffee that looks like it's been here a while."

At the deepest corner of that lab, there was a heavy metal door. When Greg saw that door, his legs gave up and he knelt on the floor. “It’s over, it’s all over.” The special forces barged in. I averted my gaze. Below was a fight ring barricaded on all sides. I was put in a cell that was like a compartment. Chains dangled from my wrist which was attached to the railings. I had to stand close to the bars to see the match that was happening on the ground floor. I didn’t miss how the floor was filthy, bloodstains all over it. The place smelled of death. A demon entered the arena, he had long horns and white clear eyes. His skin was an unnatural red. A tail jutted from his backside. He was unnaturally tall and wore a coy smile. He was holding a microphone as he walked into the center.

Right into the chaos that was her tiny-ass apartment. The place was a fucking fever dream. Plants were hanging from the ceiling like we were in a jungle, sunlight spilling through the windows. A little couch faced the TV, coffee table cluttered with books and mugs and a crocheted coaster that said hug in a cup. The rug was lopsided, probably tripped over daily, and the whole place smelled faintly like cinnamon and lavender. Then I saw it. The cat. Correction—the demon.
