“Fucking hells,” Dearon grunted as he walked over to the pile of corpses.
Dread filled every inch of me. The bodies looked like they had all dried, but dried suddenly, as if their lives had been sucked out of them in seconds. Most were unnaturally twisted, their mouths opened wide as if to scream. A shudder rattled my bones. “Gods… They must have been executed, but… what could have killed them this way?”
“A demon,” Dearon strained through his teeth. “That explains the dark substance, too. I've never seen it myself, but similar things were described by those who survived Sarendonia's attacks in the first years of war.”
