There was not a wisp of cloud in sight and no bird dared to fly across a sky that was as barren as the desert below. The stranger reached the top of a sand dune and surveyed the undulating landscape, noticing the lack of vegetation that could have otherwise broken the sun’s dominance over the desert. The few creatures that had managed to survive under such hostile conditions had buried themselves under the shifting sand and remained well hidden from the unforgiving sun. The stranger seemed to defy the harsh elements and stood out in the open with only a white scarf as face covering and a flowing garment that reached the ground.

The sand swallowed him whole, his thoughts scattering like dust in the wind until nothing remained but the howling desert and the endless march of the Sand Men. In the distance, a shadow flickered. Another warrior had fallen, another body to become one with the sands. The desert stretched out in every direction, an endless sea of blistering sand beneath a cloudless sky. The heat bore down like the weight of a thousand anvils. There was a suffocating presence that drained the strength from anyone foolish enough to venture onto its lands. But here, beneath the relentless sun, a battle was unfolding, one of desperation, blood, and the unyielding will to survive.

Isaac and I just watched with our jaws dropped. As the prisoner’s life started fading away, the bear plunged his claws into the prisoner’s chest and pulled out his heart, causing the clearing to be quiet once again. The bear walked away and we approached the body. Isaac shook his head, “Imagine surviving that huge line of people waiting to hurt you, then getting bitten by thousands of fire ants. When that finally stops hurting you have no choice but to watch as bear starts eating only the parts of your body that won’t kill you. When you finally start to feel your life slipping away, you can only watch as the bear rips out your heart.”
