It was not all, the cover was the eyes of werewolves. My brows furrowed in keen interest as well as something I can't name settling within me. Without thinking further, my hand took out the book and the front cover showed the face of werewolves with its eyes glowing in a golden hue. I brushed my fingers on the cover, mesmerized by the image. It was delicately printed and made.

The book has a black leather cover and on the center of the cover, there is a glass bulging bubble that's filled with some kind of red liquid. Please don't be blood. I bend to pick up the book and stumble back a bit. It's heavy and I lug it into the room kicking the door shut with the back of my heel before moving to sit down on my bed. "Who left you at my door." I openly think as I read over the cover. Elgadah Furrucci presents. Advanced Spells and Enchantments. English translation. The words are printed in italics across the cover. I run my hand over the cover and I can feel the light layer of dust on it. My hand stops at the glass bubble and I avoid touching that part.

The cover of the third book was a silent declaration of victory. Where the previous ones had carried dark and uncertain tones, this one displayed a watercolor in golds and deep blues—colors that evoked sunrises over the ocean, promises kept, and horizons that had finally revealed themselves within reach. The title, engraved in handwritten letters like an intimate confession, was simple and revolutionary: “To Live.”

The one that said exactly what it was and didn't need to say more. The cover is simple. No photograph. Just the title and her name and the farmhouse in a line drawing that a designer in Edinburgh created from a photograph Hope sent — the specific white exterior, the yard that goes on too long, the porch railing. You can't see the bolt mystery dish from this angle. But if you know it's there you can almost see it. Lily is twenty-four when she decides to publish it. Not before that. Before twenty-four it isn't finished. She knows it isn't finished the way she knows everything — from the inside of the watching. The record needs the full arc and the full arc requires time to complete itself.

"Nothing. Just time. Just continuing to choose each other every day." "I can do that." "Me too." Later, as we got ready for bed, Jaxon showed me something on his phone. I eye the cover of the book warily. “You know, if you keep using that book cover for all your erotic novels, someone is bound to suspect something.” With her face entirely hidden by the book, Roxie asks, “And how will they notice?” “Won't it be strange that you've been reading one book for straight three weeks?” I ask. “A werewolf anatomy book nonetheless. You should change the covers.”

Time to kill two birds with one stone—get some fresh air to calm my mind and buy groceries! The supermarket was only a few blocks away. Fluorescent lights buzzed overhead, refrigerators hummed, and the air smelled like detergent and fruit. I grabbed a basket and started with basics: milk, eggs, bread, pasta, some fruit. Things that made me look like a functioning adult. As I moved through the aisles, my thoughts drifted to the website. Cover design, pricing, whether anyone would buy an ebook written by a woman whose name autofilled with “vehicular manslaughter” online.

But hope, like magic, has a price, and I am increasingly aware of that price. The book itself is a work of macabre art. The cover, made of dark leather that almost appears black, pulses with a life of its own, as if it were breathing. The leather is stained with deep shades of red, almost as though it has been soaked in blood over the centuries, giving it a sinister and throbbing appearance. Along the edges of the cover, aged silver chains are interwoven in complex patterns, depicting ancient runes and seals of protection, symbols only an enchantress could decipher.
