The silence dragged on, until that faint mechanical hum got louder again. My stomach dropped.
He looked up, that faint smirk curling back onto his lips. “Round two, huh?”
“Don’t say that,” I whispered.
And then, as if the world heard him, the light above us flickered hard — once, twice — before the speaker crackled to life again.
“Enjoying your rest, little pets?” the sassy, snake-like voice purred, dripping with cruel amusement. “Don’t get too cozy. We’re not done playing.”
