Just as I conclude the tale, Bennis walks into the room, a scowl on her face. "What's going on here?" she asks, her voice rising. I can tell she's looking for a fight. I glance up at her, my eyes meeting hers. "Just reading a bedtime story, Bennis," I say calmly. But before she can launch into a tirade, I silence her with a look. "Let's talk outside," I suggest, standing up.

An hour later we’re all piled on the massive couch: Eden curled between Damien and me, Sydney sprawled sideways across the chaise with her feet in my lap, pie plates balanced on our stomachs while some animated T-rex argues with a triceratops on the screen. Eden’s eyes start drooping halfway through his second slice. By the time the credits roll, he’s fully passed out against Damien’s chest, his mouth wide open and one hand still clutching a half-eaten crust. Mariam suddenly appears and offers to put him to bed.
