Its body convulses violently against mine, black smoke billowing from its fur as if it's burning from the inside out, the acrid scent of charred flesh filling the air. It releases me instantly, howling a death-cry as it stumbles back—then collapses in a heap of twitching limbs, writhing once in final agony before going completely still. Dead. She hadn't forgotten—the dark gun barrel, the cold ground beneath her, the terror of being completely helpless.

Darius, his hand still tight in hers, merely smiled. "Destiny is not something one requests, Omega. It is something one orders. Your mother understood that," he replied, his eyes locked on the blood moon suspended in the heavens.
