I didn’t think about anything except the sound of Leon’s voice when he muttered something about how bad the acting was, or the heat of his hand on my waist.
But night didn’t care about pretending.
Sometime after midnight, the house was dark and still. I must have drifted off, curled against him in bed, but it wasn’t a peaceful sleep. Images came fast and sharp—flashes of fire, screams, my father’s face, my mother’s hands reaching. And then Leon’s face, cold, unflinching, watching.
I shot up, heart pounding, the scream ripping out of me before I could stop it. My chest hurt, like my ribs were trying to break apart.
