Orange, completely unfazed, brightened again. “What if Ms. Ali has other friends she can introduce us to?” He high-fived Malix enthusiastically. “Shut up,” Dexter growled. “There’s a huge cage inside this pet store. An hour p*ssed by, and no one had arrived, well, not anyone that seemed familiar to them. Two hours p*ss, and Dexter has them sit down and wait, getting them whatever snacks come in sight to divide their attention but the gloomy look on their faces keeps getting worse. Dexter shakes his head and I let out a sigh knowing our efforts are futile. Soon, Dexter joins them on the bench… But… I'm dying of laughter. The bench was designed to look like a giant pink mushroom because it's an amusement park, and Dexter being so serious and dressed in a tailored outfit looked like an oddball as the eyes of p*ssersby stared at him.

“You’re having fun too.” “I’m tolerating it.” “Liar.” Because he might have been right. We passed a series of game stalls, each one louder than the last. People shouting, bells ringing, prizes hanging everywhere. Ryker slowed down, eyes scanning everything. Then he stopped. “This one,” he said. I followed his gaze. A dart game. Balloons lined up in rows, prizes hanging above them—cheap stuffed animals in every shape and color. And then I saw it. A penguin.

Dexter played with his toys, watching the adults, especially his father, as he roared angry insults at his teacher. "Dexter, come here now!" Your father says sternly as he picks up the red color block off the table. "Son, what color is this block?" He asked you. Dexter, you shrank back, with your little lip quivering. "Honey! You are scaring our child!" "Hush, woman! Let the boy answer me. That's what's wrong with him now. You treat him like a baby! Now, Dexter, I'm only going to ask you one more time. What color is this block?"

From that alone, I could tell Dexter was a regular here. He must have been getting toys here whenever he visited the kids. “Same place?” the man asked. Dexter nodded.“But more this time.” The man smiled.“Of course, sir.” He led the way, and Dexter and I followed behind him. We walked deeper into the store. The place was even bigger than it looked from outside. There were different sections everywhere. Dolls, Cars, Action figures, Stuffed animals, and Games. I wasn’t sure if there was any toy on planet Earth that wasn’t in this shop.

I should have seen it coming, but I was too busy wrangling my father, wayward little humans, strange new hybrids, and lovesick vampires. “Hey,” Dexter says and comes crawling over to where I’m sitting. He sneaks in and out of the camp as easily as if he’s a raindrop. It’s my Gamma’s talent, and why I had him stationed at the Three Towers all those years. He won’t be able to sneak up to Bryce, but Dexter can sneak past an entire army of lesser wolves as long as he doesn’t talk or try to engage them. “How’s it looking out there?” I ask.
