He pushed them open and stepped aside. "Your laboratory, Miss Anastasia." I walked inside and stopped. My breath caught in my throat. The laboratory was huge. Sunlight poured through a wall of windows that faced the forest. The workstations were brand new, with gleaming steel surfaces and state-of-the-art equipment. Microscopes. Centrifuges. Genetic sequencers. Machines I had only ever read about in journals. A glass cabinet along one wall held rows of labeled samples. A computer screen on the main desk displayed a three-dimensional model of werewolf DNA.

Dexter commands and instantly the room is as silent as a graveyard. "There is a rat inside the company, so we're going to find them, and I just hope whoever is out there or here in this room with us, is ready to take care of them, because I hate rats."

Adela had thought long and hard before finally asking the question. She liked Layson—naturally, she wanted to understand more about him. But when she saw Dexter’s stunned expression, the anxiety in her heart only grew stronger. “What’s wrong? Did something come to mind?” Dexter quickly concealed the flash of shock in his eyes. He scooped a spoonful of his herbal soup and finally replied in a low voice, “I vaguely remember something. I think I was under ten at the time, so I’m not entirely sure. But this isn’t something you should bring up in the Norman family.”

I ask him already defeated. “No, actually I’m more interested in what your offer is. What ideas you have going on in that brain of yours. I’ve seen the way you have grown Merrick and Associates. Selene, you are a hell of a talent, and I would be foolish not to work with you. So please. Let’s order and you yell to me about your ideas.” Dexter hands me a menu, and I smile. “That sounds like a good idea.” I feel the baby in agreement as we begin to order a lot of food from the menu. I feel a little more at ease.

Alejandro entered the room next, holding a file. “Vexler’s ledger,” he said, tossing it on the table. “Encrypted, but cracked. There’s one more lab. Switzerland. Remote. Buried in a glacier.” Dino picked it up. “Another project?” Alejandro’s eyes met his. “It’s labeled Genesis. But there’s no data. Just one name.” Elena leaned forward. “Whose?” Alejandro turned the file so they could read it. Dino Moretti. The room went silent.

But before I could ask any questions, Derek continued. "Dexter and I were roommates in college," he explained. "He's now a successful psychiatrist, and I've been wanting to bring you to meet him for ages." I shook Dexter's hand, trying to play along despite my growing confusion.
