Difference Between Fiction Non Fiction Novels & Stories

The usual genres one would expect to find at a book fair, too: history, fiction, non-fiction, folklore, fantasy, fairytales… everything. I had wondered and hoped that I could find the fiction book about the female alpha, but there was nothing of the sort to be found. I would rummage through the boxes each day, hoping to find something, but nothing. Nothing at all. Picking up a large pile of books from a box, I strolled towards a table that was getting empty to fill it up again.

Sprinted to the door, I pulled it open, not expecting it to open, but it did, causing my heart to swell in joy. Ambling to the shelf, my eyes darted round the various book covers. Fiction was my favorite book to read because the best thing about reading was to be able to escape from your life, to be able to read hundreds or even thousands of other lives. Non-fiction does not have that power, it does not change you the way fiction does. To me, if you are not affected somehow, even if it is the slightest change, you are not reading the right book. I would love to think that every novel I have read has become a part of me and created who I am in a sense.

There is no ambiguity about the status of fiction, but there is considerable ambiguity about that of the other two kinds of stories. The problem is that it is only quite late in the development of a human society that people begin to understand the distinction between traditional beliefs and beliefs that are arrived at by experiment, research and the rigorous application of reason. The name that we have for this latter category of beliefs is “science”. I want to make it very clear that the distinction between science and non-science is not that of truth and falsity. That is an entirely separate issue. The distinction lies in the way that the two belief systems arrive at their conclusions.

“You should stop reading fiction books. They are just fiction. They don’t teach you anything worthwhile.” Iva smiled at him because she knew that he was upset due to her book-reading habit as she wouldn’t let him get close until she finished the book. “Non fiction does inform the mind, but fiction infiltrates it. One gives you the maps of the world, while the other lets you wander through many worlds from your home. How is that even possible?” “Okay, Bias, I’m going to blow your mind with one hell of a revelation about writers and their stories. I’m pretty sure Lewis Carroll never fell down a rabbit hole into a magical Wonderland; it doesn’t seem likely that Anne Rice believes in vampires; and I highly doubt J.K. Rowling has met any real wizards. That’s what makes it fiction and not nonfiction.”

Neither one spoke for a few moments; they simply stared at one another, at a loss of what to do next. Rick cleared his throat again, and that seemed to break the spell. “I’ve got spy thrillers and murder mysteries over here, by author,” he managed, gesturing to the right. “Next sections down the right side are sci-fi, romance, and the other fictional genres. Left side is all the nonfiction, biographies, and so on.” Faith chuckled.

Logan asked. Ellis shook her head. “We have fictional videos, too. We call them movies. They tell stories to amuse and entertain, not to inform. Like novels… but on film.” “How confusing! How do people know which is true and which is not?” Leo asked. “We called the real one's documentary. The movies were more popular, though.” “That’s a thing about our culture. Humans prefer fantasy to truth.” Ellis looked down at Mitch’s image on the screen. “Some people here seem to prefer it, too.”

So I pasted a friendly smile on my face and spoke to her. "We have both fiction and nonfiction books, and there are a lot of genres under each. We have romance, fantasy, horror, sci-fi and the likes under fiction and we also have self help, motivation, religious, educational books and such under non fiction, so please feel free to explore." My voice was professional. "Um...what books do you like?Personally?" It took everything in me not to show my frustration. "I'm not picky with books."

She wished she could believe that. "Seems to be some general split between fiction and nonfiction," he announced from the other side of the big room. "Fiction's on that side, everything else is over here. I've found sections on botany, biographies and archaeology so far, so I guess it's more or less alphabetical.
