The deafening blast instantly ripped through the air above the tarmac. The immense sound wave completely drowned out the heart-wrenching wails of the man beyond the perimeter. The cabin doors slowly closed. The plane taxied, accelerated, and launched into the sky. Through the window, I took one last look at the runway. Jaxson slumped on the ground like a lifeless pile of mud. He tilted his head back, watching in despair as the plane broke through the clouds. Then, he violently slammed the sharp bone pendant right into his infected heart.

Before walking through, I took one last look at him. “Have a safe flight.” Standing outside the crowd, George wept silently. This time, I didn’t stop for him. As the plane took off, the cityscape outside the window shrank into the distance. I switched my phone into airplane mode. One second before the screen went dark, a text message from George slipped through. “I’m sorry, Millie.” I didn’t respond to his text. The clouds unfolded outside the window. The sunlight poured into the cabin. It was perfectly bright.

Leah's Pov: Its bright flames burned the nearest window spreading rapidly to the sides of the airplanes and the smoke blackened the sky. I gripped the armrest until my knuckles turned white; the airplane was in a dead dive, the runway rushing up to meet us. Instant death flashed before my eyes.
