The plot begins with the detective finding the body. The gap between those two points is where suspense and structure live.

Thinking about 'The Godfather', the story spans decades of the Corleone family's rise. The plot chooses to start at Connie's wedding, introducing the characters and their world before plunging into the war. It withholds information, jumps time, and focuses on specific scenes to build thematic weight around power and corruption. Without a deliberate plot, the same story could feel like a meandering family history. It's the difference between a timeline and a crafted experience designed to provoke specific questions and emotions at specific times.

A novel is like a deep dive into a fictional universe where characters come alive, and their stories unfold over hundreds of pages. It's a specific type of book, but not all books are novels.
