Chapter 104: First Impressions Blake had heard the car pull up. He dawdled, swiping at imaginary smudges on the passenger door of the de Havilland Beaver that rested at the end of the dock. He had no desire to get caught up in whatever celebrity fanfare accompanied their new guest's arrival.

Ashley gave me a look of disbelief, but she didn't press the matter any further. “Well, let's go girls, we're already late," Blake said, smirking as he headed toward the door. “Won't you have breakfast first?” Mom asked. Ashley put a pancake in her mouth and mumbled inaudibly, as she hauled me towards the door, and we left. His car was a black 1970 Ford Capri, it was too clean it looked brand new.

He leaned down, placing both hands flat on the table, bringing his dark face just inches from mine. "Stop lying!" Blake snarled, his voice trembling with terrifying rage! "Scarlet didn't drive a sports car! Scarlet was a sickly girl who spent half her life in hospital rooms! She couldn't drive that fast because of her condition! You expect me to believe a dying girl with a heart defect was drag-racing through Poblacion at midnight?!"

Blake picked me up just after sunset. His car was spotless, like always. The engine purred low, and the music playing was barely audible some moody instrumental thing that felt like it didn’t want to intrude. Or maybe he didn’t know if we were supposed to talk, or just pretend none of this was strange. We didn’t say much on the drive. I stared out the window, Caleb’s note folded in my jacket pocket like a second heartbeat. Each word still echoing. Start with the incident… don’t wait… don’t trust too easily.
