I waited in the hallway, my stomach in knots, Liora pacing restlessly in my mind. Finally, the door opened. Dr. Steve gestured me inside. My mother sat on the examination table, looking small and frightened. I went to her side, took her hand. Dr. Steve pulled up images on a large screen. X-rays. Brain scans. Areas highlighted in red. "Ms. Moonhollow." His voice was serious. "Your mother has a significant injury to her brain. Specifically, the Broca's area the part responsible for speech production." I stared at the screen. "What caused it?"

Two distinct forms. Two spines. Two heads. Two separate heartbeats flickering on the screen. For a second, my brain refused to understand what I was seeing. “That can’t be right,” I said automatically. The doctor blinked. “I’m… honestly surprised this wasn’t detected earlier.” Ava’s voice trembled. “Detected what?” The doctor turned the monitor fully toward us. “You’re carrying twins.” Silence fell. Heavy. Total. My ears rang. “Twins?” Ava whispered.

For six goddamn years, the doctor told me it was my eyes. “You’re telling me that for six years, the asshole who was here before you got it wrong?” “Exactly.” His tone is flat. Unbothered. “The part of your brain responsible for facial recognition is damaged. That’s why you can’t see faces. It’s not your eyesight. It’s your brain misfiring.” I slam my hand on the desk. The sound echoes in the room. “You’re saying my fucking brain is broken?” “Yes,” he says bluntly. “And it’s rare. Extremely rare. The kind of thing most doctors won’t think to check for.”

The door opens and the doctor walks in. “Good to see you awake,” he says as he looks at me and Mara nods. “How long was I out?” I ask, and he looks at the chart and then at me and smiles. “Almost one day, but your brain needed the rest to recover, you’re doing so much better, and your scans are clean, but I would like to ask you some questions about the bruises,” he says and I take a deep breath looking at Mara that has her eyes on me.

Third Person POV The best among the best doctors were there to look for her. Still he felt not a tint of relief. The doctors gathered were studying the files, reports. Passing judgements framing strategies, the words which reached him were making him feel more worried. "She had survived serious injuries." The senior consultant said. "There are fractures at neck, rib cage, leg." The orthopaedics added scanning through the x- rays. "Firstly we need to work on dealing with the brain injury. If brain denies to respond we can't do anything to save her." The neurologist replied in a serious voice.

I squeeze his hand and hold it firmly in mine. He puts the wand on my stomach and begins moving it around, watching the screen beside him. I stare at the screen, then look at Ezra, frowning. He has the same look of confusion on his face that I do on mine. “Ahhh, well, I’m glad to know my instincts are still on target,” Dr. Samuel says. “That’s great, doctor. What instincts are those?” Ezra asks impatiently. Dr. Samuel turns and smiles at us. “You’re having twins.”

Clarissa pressed, her eyes narrowing into cold slits. "During a full-body CT scan to assess the trauma, we discovered severe abnormalities in his brain structure," the doctor explained quietly. He held up the scan images for her to see. "There is extensive degenerative tissue damage from a past severe head injury that was never properly treated medically. Added to that, there are signs of long-term exposure to toxic chemical agents that have damaged his central nervous system." Clarissa stood rooted to the spot. "Toxic chemicals? What do you mean?"

“It’s been three years. Why is it happening now?” “It could be the stress of the company mixed with your upcoming nuptials. It could be that your brain finally thinks you’re ready to recover from the injury. It could be anything really. We still know so little about the brain.” Dr. Jha sat in her chair. “We can do a scan, make sure that everything is okay back there and that there isn’t any excessive swelling that would be causing the headaches. However, I think it’s just that your memories might have started resurfacing.” I looked up at her and she was staring at my folder, but I knew she wasn’t reading any one thing on the page.

My sister, Cindy Gardner, and I are fraternal twins. She gets to be the elder sister because she comes out one minute before me, making me the younger brother. Luckily, there's little difference between us when it comes to intelligence. Throughout our school years, one of us always ranks first, and the other comes in second. The younger one scribbled something on a chart like that would fix any of this. “I think,” the older doctor began carefully, “that we may be dealing with some… delusional memories. It’s not uncommon after traumatic brain injury. We’ll schedule an MRI and—” “I don’t have brain damage,” I snapped, then gave a humourless little laugh because, okay, I could practically hear the universe going sure. “Or if I do, it’s the least of my problems.”
