Silence. “Mr. Hawkins?” the doctor asked carefully. “Can you see me? How many fingers am I holding up?” I didn’t answer. He must have noticed my facial expression because he turned to me, his bespectacled eyes holding surprise. “Don't tell me you don't know them,” he whispered incredulously. I shrugged, they were probably medical personnel just like everyone else in this room beside me and Jared. Like he could read my thoughts, the Doctor began to explain, his voice so bubbly like he considered it a privilege to be talking about the newcomers.

Jay looked like he was reconsidering every belief system he had ever adopted. River’s eyes were so wide I thought they might fall out. Jane had gone very still, which was never a good sign. The light above me grew brighter as someone shone a small flashlight into my eyes. “Mr. Steven, can you hear me?” the doctor asked, his voice firm but controlled. I couldn’t respond right away. My throat was dry. My body still felt unbearably heavy. But I tried, just barely to move my eyes, forcing them to stay open. “Pupils are responsive,” the doctor said briefly. “Mr. Steven, if you can hear me, try to blink.” It took effort. That throbbing pain in my cheek was again returning and this time with more vengeance. “I need to examine her face,” the doctor spoke to the short man when he entered the room, “Hello, there.” He gave me a gentle smile and patted my arm, “I need to examine you so just relax. Blink twice if it’s a yes and once if it’s a no. Got it?” I blinked at the question, and he chuckled, “If it’s a yes then it’s twice, love. If you want, you can squeeze my hand twice… Now what have we got here…”

"Argh! Where exactly is my wallet?" Reluctant to give up, the Doctor flopped down on the floor. His eyes narrowed. He searched the dark corners under the table with the help of his cell phone's flashlight. But once again, he only got a passing spider and an itchy nose. The dust was so annoying that the Doctor couldn't bear to peek under the table for long. "Doctor Jeffry?" called the nurse. "Yes?" Jeff patted his clothes, shaking off the dust. "Are you all right?"
