“You might be sensitive to light… and your vision could be blurry at first. Just take your time.” I gave a small nod, then slowly lifted my eyelids. Blinking once. Twice. Silence. “Mr. Hawkins?” the doctor asked carefully. “Can you see me? How many fingers am I holding up?” I didn’t answer. A tear slipped quietly down my cheek. “Sir!” Smith said at the top of his voice. “Is everything alright?” Poor boy. He was probably very surprised to see somebody like me tearing up for no reason. “Mr. Sebastian Hawkins…” the doctor’s voice lowered, “Are you probably crying tears of joy?”

He must have noticed my facial expression because he turned to me, his bespectacled eyes holding surprise. “Don't tell me you don't know them,” he whispered incredulously. I shrugged, they were probably medical personnel just like everyone else in this room beside me and Jared. Like he could read my thoughts, the Doctor began to explain, his voice so bubbly like he considered it a privilege to be talking about the newcomers.

I hiccup on the last word. A ripple of laughter goes round; he doesn’t laugh. He puffs his chest like a rooster who owns the joint. “You better watch your mouth.” “Oh, I am watching it,” I say sweetly, pointing at my lips. “It’s saying, ‘Go to hell.’” That pushes him over. He stands, looming. “You got a death wish, lady?” “Buddy,” I slur, smirking, “I’m a doctor. I can pronounce myself dead if it comes to that.”

Frank stood by the closed door, shoulders squared, his presence pressing against the air itself. Then, slowly, he turned. Every movement measured. Every step intentional. His eyes found mine across the concrete floor, dark and unwavering. And then he spoke. He jerked awake so hard the doctor actually cursed out loud, which honestly felt validating because at least I was not the only one internally screaming. “What the hell,” the doctor said, staring at his fingers like they had personally betrayed him. Victor blinked once. Then twice. Then looked around like he had just woken up from the best nap of his undead life. I looked at everyone else. Alex mouth was slightly open.
