A flash, a crack then nothing but darkness and the echo of retreating footsteps. By the time power returned, Enzo was gone. Matteo stared down at the flash drive, jaw tight. “He wants us to follow.” Bianca met his gaze. “Then let’s remind him ghosts only haunt the living for so long.”

He was contradicting himself and confusing me at the same time. “I, Enzo, never die,” he said. “Even if I do, it’s just for a moment. I come back to life.”

I finally said, the words coming out flat, deliberate. There was no point dressing it up. Not with them. They didn’t look shocked because I already filled them in on it. “Yes,” I continued, my gaze steady. “She killed him. And no one knows… except us. And Ronan.” I let that sit there, heavy and final. “Thank fuck,” Enzo exhaled, loud and unfiltered, like he’d been holding it in since the moment she walked out. Relief looked strange on him, but it was there.

Xander would have continued to marvel at Enzo's state if there wasn't something urgent that he needed him for. “Alpha.” He called and Enzo jumped slightly and his eyes widened when he spotted Xander. His reaction soon went back to normal though as he had quick adapting capabilities. “What is it?” Enzo asked blankly and Xander raised his brow at how quick he switched but he didn't dwell on it. “Alpha, those birds you left in the cage passed away today.” Xander knew he didn't have to elaborate what he meant because Enzo would understand it. Enzo's face immediately became sullen and he frowned. “Do you know what killed them?”

“Is she ill?” “Shouldn’t she heal.” “He’s watching me.” Maddie mutters “Who?” “He’s always watching. It’s wrong. It can’t happen. He’s watching.” Mallory looks at me with a face that screams ‘help’ “Maddie, who is watching you?” I push “My mate.” She whispers as her eyes bulge and she starts to rock. “The guy who marked you is dead.” Mallory crouches down to her. “Enzo’s dead. Left alone, the gun I was holding dropped from my hand as I stared hard at Vanessa, who was already dead. Enzo was still alive. How had he managed to survive? That didn’t matter anymore. Now that I knew he was somewhere out there, I needed to be careful, especially in protecting the woman I loved.
