Maria polished a side table, humming softly.
“Where’s Enzo?” I demanded, breath ragged.
She startled, eyes flicking to my attire, then away. “In his study, signorina. It’s down to the east hall, second left and
oak doors.”
I nodded thanks and bolted, heart hammering. The corridor stretched endless—portraits of stern ancestors, vases taller than me. I turned left, found the doors ajar, voices leaking through.
“…plan’s in motion,” Enzo said, voice low and lethal. “With Russo’s death they will believe that the man they thought had died five years ago, still lives.”
