She grabbed some dog treats and approached him slowly. "Sweet little wolf, are you hungry?" she asked, her voice trembling slightly. Drex, sensing her anxiety, sat perfectly still. He put on a playful expression and wagged his tail, doing his best to appear harmless. "Oh, you’re so sweet!" the woman murmured. Without further hesitation, she reached out and stroked Drex’s head. Drex closed his eyes, leaning into the warmth of her gentle touch. "Eat up, little one. If you see someone bad, just run! Don't mind me—I'm old, but you still have your whole life ahead of you," she whispered as she pulled Drex into a soft embrace.

Jane walked up and down the shelves, half looking at the titles, half looking at nothing. "Here's another one," Emily called over to her in a loud whisper. "A horse of Her Own.
