It's not a pet owner dynamic; it's a pack dynamic. He becomes another animal in their eyes, and they become his only family. The book strips away sentimentality to show a bond forged from pure necessity, which somehow makes it feel more real and profound than a lot of other animal stories I've read. The loyalty feels earned, not given.

It also contrasts that with how other humans in the story treat animals, purely as tools or threats. That gap highlights the protagonist's isolation and his choice to side with the non-human world. Makes you think about where we draw the line between 'human' and 'animal' ourselves, especially when society falls apart. The ending left me quiet for a while, just thinking about that mutual reliance.
