Nothing about the day spelled disaster. The sun hung high in a brilliant sky, casting a golden sheen over the city as Lilian drove through familiar streets. She gripped the steering wheel tightly, her thoughts as heavy as the task ahead. When the car pulled into the chapel parking lot, she surveyed the scene. The crowd was immense. Almost everyone had come to pay their last respects to Uncle George. Inside, the chapel was packed, each pew filled with somber faces.

Alice’s POV The rain slapping the pavement as I stepped out of the car was noisy, cutting through my sorrow. It was the first thing I’d really heard all day, and I wondered if it was grandpa’s tears as he wept for his family. Bryce's men and several of Winona's relatives transported the body to a hearse while Priscilla and the other female relatives sobbed loudly. Holly stood beside the hearse, where she would be closest to Winona. She said in her heart, "Don't be afraid, Grandma. I'm here." The hearse was about to head to the crematory facility. Many others were present at that moment, including Winona's relatives, neighbors, and students. As the hearse started, Holly grabbed the handle of one of the doors and started sobbing.
