He paused, still grinning. “There’s that old saying, you know: Don’t judge a book by its cover.”
Ann hesitated. For a brief second, his tone had softened, laced with something unexpectedly real. Not charm. Not arrogance. Just… truth. She studied him, her mind spinning.
“Fine,” she said slowly. “Maybe I don’t know you. But you haven’t exactly given me reason to want to.”
“Touché,” he replied with a small bow of his head. “Still, don’t you want to know what I’m offering before you slam the door on it?”
