It’s not like we’ve had a real talk. Santana jumps and claps her hands together happily. “Of course. That’s great! I can’t wait to tell Declan. You don’t know how happy he’ll be to know you’re no longer dating any more insipid skeletons. You should see these women, April. They wear so much makeup and spend the whole time taking selfies with their phones. It was awful.” At my horrified expression, April chuckles mirthfully. “Looks like your sister has you pegged.”

Bluey was mid-sentence, telling a particularly hilarious story about a misadventure at a concert years ago, when the doorbell rang. April chuckled, shaking her head. “Aiden probably forgot something,” she said, pushing back her chair. “I’ll get it.” Feeling a renewed sense of energy from the joy her friends brought, April walked to the door, no longer weighed down by exhaustion or stress. But as soon as she opened the door, her mouth dropped in shock. Standing there, grinning like they’d just pulled off the ultimate surprise, were Jessica, Genevieve, and Gift. “What the—” April gasped, her hand flying to her chest. “Are you guys trying to give me a heart attack?!”

“Jace Blackwell. Look who decided to drag his pretty ass in here on a weekday.” I grin when I see Donny leaning against the ropes of the main ring. He’s been here since my father was still sneaking out to fight underground before he put on his fancy suits. Donny’s hair is more gray than black now, his nose is crooked three different ways, his smile is big, and he is missing a tooth. He flicks his eyes at Liana, who’s hovering near the door with her arms crossed like she might bolt any second. “And who’s this? Didn’t know you brought your girlfriends around here.”

He stated, "IN PRIVATE." Why do I feel uneasy? What exactly is this about? I gave the others a sign to leave the room and they all did. His men went out too. I stared at him unable to speak, I feel like he's going to ask me everything about Lea. "Do you happen to know a human girl by the name Donnie who looks exactly like Lea?" He blurted out. Donnie? He found out about her? How did he know about her so fast? "How did you...."

"When you were looking at that magazine, your eyes were glued to this ring. Couldn't look away." "So I bought it for you." There was a smile playing at the corner of his mouth. He had no idea I'd only stared at the ring so he could pay off his debt faster. The cold of the diamond crept up my finger and into my chest. I shivered. But he didn't need my help. Did he? The voice on the phone had just called him Don. The Angelo I knew was a broke kid drowning in mob debt. What a joke. "Three whole years," My voice came out cold. "A Don playing dirt-poor with me. Was it fun?"

Someone was reading aloud, "Eldest son, Luca Bellandi. Eldest daughter, Aria Bellandi. Effective immediately, their names are entered into the family registry as legitimate heirs of the Bellandi bloodline." In the video, Matteo lifted the two children high. Applause and cheers erupted around him. He was smiling. He exchanged a look with Sienna, his eyes full of affection. Once, he had only looked at me that way. Now that look no longer belonged to me. Another message appeared beneath the video: "He said once the children are formally acknowledged by the Family, he'll give you a sum of money and send you away. The position of Donna belongs to the children's real mother.

He was wearing a ridiculous mouse headband too. Daniel's eyes were full of boundless, tender love. Scrolling down, I saw photos of them at the beach, the theater, and every single place on my bucket list. I had once begged Daniel to go to all those places with me. He either said they were too childish or that he would go with me next time. The comments section was filled with blessings for the couple. "What a loving couple! I didn't expect to see Don Marino wearing matching headbands with Mrs. Marino."

"Ms. Ricci, something has happened to the signore!" Before the pain of being hacked apart could fade from my mind, the housekeeper, Beatrice Santoro, rushed into my room, her face drained of all color. I lowered my head. In my mind, all I could see were the faces of my two children, covered in blood, screaming as they clung to me. "The Don is still at the family gathering," Beatrice said in a hushed voice. "The signore said he feels dizzy and can't catch his breath. He's resting in the east guest room right now… Ms. Ricci, could you go check on him?"

My fists were shaking, though I knew hitting him was impossible. "You are just the worst person, Dorian. Why won't you come clean with what you did to me?" "I did, April. I apologised. I am trying to make things right..." "Right for me or right for yourself?" He looked at me in shock. He stuttered as he tried to find words to explain his useless endeavour. "April, what are you even talking about?"
