A line drawn in fire. The black dragon lowered his head, smoke curling from between his teeth. His eyes remained on Nyra. Not on the bodies he had just made ash. Not on the field he had nearly conquered by fear alone. On her. Then he shifted back. This time I watched every detail. The massive form folding inward. Wings sinking. Scales sliding into a shape almost human, though not fully.

I turned to find him standing in the doorway, dragon coloring book clutched to his chest, his eyes wide with concern. "No, baby. I'm okay." I crouched down to his level. "Just dealing with some boring grown-up stuff." "The boring stuff makes you look sad." He came closer, putting his small hand on my cheek. "Don't be sad. We can color dragons together. He grabbed my hand, tugging me back toward the table where his coloring supplies were spread out. "Come on! I'm making a Christmas dragon. It has red and green scales!"
