“So, what’s your first move?” Conner handed Sloane a copy of the script from Alexa. He had already made another copy for use at home. “This week’s show,” he explained. “You read it yet?” Sloane fanned the pages of the script with his thumb. “No,” he said. “What’s in it?” “Read it. Start with page seventeen.” Conner watched silently while Sloane began reading. Three pages in, Sloane’s brow frowned. He read for a moment more, then closed the script and looked up at Conner, his eyes filled with compassion.

Jenna Brooks’s POV "I... I don't know," I stuttered, and Liam smiled. I watched as he picked up his phone and stared at the screen for a moment before raising his head to look at me. "The play is this weekend. If we go watch it, we can study the staging, characters, analyze the theme, set design, and performance history all in one go. That's like fixing ninety-five percent of the project in one day without burying your face in a book for days."

Especially on a day like this. Before I could stop myself, curiosity got the better of me. “What’s the role they offered you, by the way?” Stella opened her mouth to answer, but before she could get a word out, a voice boomed across the set. “Margarette! Stella! We’re starting the script reading. Conference hall, now please.” It was the casting director, her clipboard tucked under one arm, waving us toward the building. “Guess we’ll find out soon enough,” Stella said with a grin, and we both followed the rest of the cast inside.

"A picnic? In the middle of the day?" Alex nodded enthusiastically. "Why not? It'll be romantic." Ryan's eyes narrowed. "Alex, I'm not going on a romantic picnic with you." Alex frowned a little before remembering something. She smiled sweetly and pulled out a script from behind the couch cushion. "then, can you help me practice my lines for this new drama I got a role in?" Ryan raised an eyebrow, "What's the drama about?" She shrugged. "Just a romantic comedy. But I need someone to practice with."

Claire commented enthused by his passion. "Why don't we try a quick reading? Here," he said passing her a script, "just read these lines for me. Titania has just woken after being enchanted to fall in love with whomever she first sees. This is what she says to her new love." Eager to please, Claire stood with her legs apart and bare chest thrust out and, holding the script in her left hand, allowed her other arm to wave dramatically as she spoke.

He said thank you for picking up. She said all right. She put the phone down and looked at the rosemary jar and thought about the particular quality of that exchange. Short. Contained. Nothing asked for. Nothing performed. Just two people confirming that the other was there. The third night she did not call anyone. She sat at the kitchen table and read the script properly for the first time since Calder Street. Not the sections she had already worked on. The whole thing from the beginning. She read with the particular focus she brought to work she was serious about. Making notes. Turning pages back to check something. Reading a line twice when it landed differently the second time.

If I get tired enough, I’ll just say individual words and hope that gets the point across. But the thing about being on stage is, well, abridging to that degree could very well change the entire play. It can lead people to misunderstanding or completely missing the message the writer was trying to portray. Though, of course, with this being some werewolf fantasy story, the message just seems to be ‘werewolf hot,’ but whatever. Anyway, the drama club is doing really well because they’ve, thus far, not expressed any irritation that I keep stuttering over my lines. Or, if they do, they at least don’t yell at me for it.

“I’ll be reading Mae. The bookstore clerk.” That was it. The director nodded, then gestured to the male actor across the table. “Daniel, you’re up. Scene three.” He nodded. “Action.” The room fell silent. *** TABLE READ – SCENE THREE INT. BOOKSTORE – DAY Daniel (pulling a book from the shelf, flipping through it) “I’m looking for something… different.” Mae (not looking up) “Different how?” Daniel “Something about self-growth. The cast goes up backstage to prepare and I lean on the wall for support as we wait for the first section to finish their play. They are doing the classical Romeo and Juliet whereas they add a little bit of drama to it. Almost all scenes are depicted with a crybaby Main Lead. After some time the announcer told everyone that the first section completed their performance and was introducing us already.
