Jenna Brooks’s POV "I... I don't know," I stuttered, and Liam smiled. I watched as he picked up his phone and stared at the screen for a moment before raising his head to look at me. "The play is this weekend. If we go watch it, we can study the staging, characters, analyze the theme, set design, and performance history all in one go. That's like fixing ninety-five percent of the project in one day without burying your face in a book for days."

Especially on a day like this. Before I could stop myself, curiosity got the better of me. “What’s the role they offered you, by the way?” Stella opened her mouth to answer, but before she could get a word out, a voice boomed across the set. “Margarette! Stella! We’re starting the script reading. Conference hall, now please.” It was the casting director, her clipboard tucked under one arm, waving us toward the building. “Guess we’ll find out soon enough,” Stella said with a grin, and we both followed the rest of the cast inside.

The one I'd signed in Ezra's study the night of the rehearsal dinner with shaking hands and a bleeding scalp and the desperate certainty that any door was better than the one Julian had locked behind me. I'd read it before. Quickly. In crisis. Scanning for the basics. Names, dates, terms of the arrangement. I hadn't read it the way I read financial documents because it wasn't a financial document. It was a lifeline. You don't scrutinize a lifeline. You grab it.

His voice low and firm. “I know you all have digitalized versions of your scripts, but you will be getting the paper copies in a few minutes, along with your schedules, filming venues and the likes. Today, we will have our first reading session-“ his voice was cut off by a body wracking cough. Rhonda leaned in and whispered to him but he waved her off. “Not everyone in this room will be present for the reading,” he continued, but I wanted everyone her today, so you see the faces working in front and behind the screens to make the movie happen.

If it were him, he wouldn't approve of Hannah's scenes. As it turns out, this director was Dylan. After introductions, Dylan invited everyone to sit down. It was only then he recognized Gabriella. He couldn't help but look at her several times, wondering how Hannah's stand-in had become her assistant too. The actors sat at the table with their scripts and started reading together. Most people understood that table reads usually happen after choosing the cast and before the official start of filming. The timing varied but it was usually within two weeks to two months.

Claire commented enthused by his passion. "Why don't we try a quick reading? Here," he said passing her a script, "just read these lines for me. Titania has just woken after being enchanted to fall in love with whomever she first sees. This is what she says to her new love." Eager to please, Claire stood with her legs apart and bare chest thrust out and, holding the script in her left hand, allowed her other arm to wave dramatically as she spoke.

He said thank you for picking up. She said all right. She put the phone down and looked at the rosemary jar and thought about the particular quality of that exchange. Short. Contained. Nothing asked for. Nothing performed. Just two people confirming that the other was there. The third night she did not call anyone. She sat at the kitchen table and read the script properly for the first time since Calder Street. Not the sections she had already worked on. The whole thing from the beginning. She read with the particular focus she brought to work she was serious about. Making notes. Turning pages back to check something. Reading a line twice when it landed differently the second time.

If I get tired enough, I’ll just say individual words and hope that gets the point across. But the thing about being on stage is, well, abridging to that degree could very well change the entire play. It can lead people to misunderstanding or completely missing the message the writer was trying to portray. Though, of course, with this being some werewolf fantasy story, the message just seems to be ‘werewolf hot,’ but whatever. Anyway, the drama club is doing really well because they’ve, thus far, not expressed any irritation that I keep stuttering over my lines. Or, if they do, they at least don’t yell at me for it.
