Listening to Astrid’s constant chatter every day on the drive to the complex is annoying as fuck, but being alone with my thoughts this morning is even worse. I’m probably just reading into this. Rhea blew a whistle. “Positions!” Squad One clustered around Rin, forming a lopsided defensive ring. Squad Two melted back toward the far end of the field, spreading out. Rowan and Mara took up spots on the sideline; Rowan had chalked three crude versions of the mutated symbol into the dirt at random intervals, faint glows already flickering around them. “When you hear ‘mark,’” he called, “eyes first, then brains, then mouths. The ghosts arrive a few hours before the players, and that's when you do the makeup." She handed me a stylish wrist device. "This is a summoning device. When it lights up, bring your makeup kit and come to work."

I was literally asking all of them to be buried alive with Asher, so my expectations weren’t high. But as soon as the squad leader signed the contract, one by one the rest of the fifteen squad members did too. My eyes travelled from Asher to the squad who stood behind him. Their emotional auras had united into one fierce flame of pure white loyalty. I gave the squad the entry coordinates. “These coordinates…” the squad leader mumbled, widening his eyes. ‘Trust me,’ I spoke in his mind. “Take positions!” The leader commanded the squad, who knelt around Asher, arranging themselves in a circular formation.

“Good. Make sure to monitor the rest of the island and to look for any suspicious activity. Squad 1-A will be joining you from now on.” The four of us flinched, hearing the name of our squad. I looked at Gabriella and they were already staring at us. She didn’t look scary or intimidating, but she had this cold stare that looks like she doesn’t want us. “I’m Red Quinscity, leader of the squad. Pleased to meet you,” I introduced and extended my hand.

Miko stepped forward, taking Killian’s place. “Alright – listen up!” Miko’s said, “I want three squads. We will know more about the Shifters as they get closer, and we can develop our exact plan of attack later. "Good morning LIN!" Ashley bowed shortly. Alex patted her head as he walked by. The rest greeted him with less vigour, Andrew way less than the others. "I suppose you are Squad 10, aren't you?" he looked at them. "Yup! That's us all right!" Ethan affirmed, smiling widely. Alex adjusted his glasses and smiled back at him. He turned to them all. "Okay then. Let's get down to business as I have somewhere else to be."

I'm down with it because it's a good cause and not because asshole Mancini keeps going on about traditions and sh*t .

Hearing all this, Jim fell silent for a long time. Just as he turned to leave, Todd, Mona, and Julian all grabbed at his sleeves. In that moment, after life and death, after suspicion and countless trials, their squad was still holding together. Jim suddenly smiled. The icy despair left behind by Sophie's betrayal finally began to thaw. "Captain Reid, I'd like to keep my squad intact," Jim said. "You're a league, right?
