My chest rose and fell quickly, my skin burning with heat, my eyes glazed with exhaustion and shame. But even then, lying there in the dark, I couldn’t escape the thought of him. The fae. The golden-eyed stranger. The one who had already ruined me with just one night’s glimpse. And as I drifted into sleep, one thought clung to me like a curse. I would go back again.

And I had been foolish enough to feel guilty, desperate to cure his legs as if I owed him everything. The tears I shed now washed away the last fragments of attachment I had for him. This false marriage, carried on for five years, needed to end here. As I closed my eyes and finally let go, a cold mechanical voice rang through my mind. Steven pulled a chair over and sat at the foot of the bed. A strange, almost trance-like smile hovered on his lips as he settled in.
