And in front of me, a small figure stood barefoot on the shimmering ground.

My chest rose and fell quickly, my skin burning with heat, my eyes glazed with exhaustion and shame. But even then, lying there in the dark, I couldn’t escape the thought of him. The fae. The golden-eyed stranger. The one who had already ruined me with just one night’s glimpse. And as I drifted into sleep, one thought clung to me like a curse. I would go back again.

And I had been foolish enough to feel guilty, desperate to cure his legs as if I owed him everything. The tears I shed now washed away the last fragments of attachment I had for him. This false marriage, carried on for five years, needed to end here. As I closed my eyes and finally let go, a cold mechanical voice rang through my mind. Without looking back, he reached for the door and shut it behind him, sealing off his mother's voice along with the rest of the world. No matter how much he tried to restore it, the bedroom could never return to what it once was. The paint on the walls, scrubbed away with steel wool, left uneven scars behind. Steven pulled a chair over and sat at the foot of the bed. A strange, almost trance-like smile hovered on his lips as he settled in.
