Emily yawns so hard she nearly falls off her chair. I nod, ready to collapse. But when I stand, my feet move on their own. Not toward my room. Toward Noah’s. I don’t even realize it until I’m already inside, sitting on the edge of his bed with the prophecy book open in my lap. The pages glow faintly in the dim light, like they’re whispering to me. Noah closes the door behind us, watching me with that soft, steady look he always has when he’s worried. “You’re spiraling again,” he says gently.

In the process, he had forgotten that he had once loved me too. Hazily, I heard someone calling my name. When I snapped back to reality, I saw Dad plunging a dagger through his chest. Even so, he was smiling. Slowly, I, too, faded away, with nothing left to feel.

Not knowing what else to do, I let out a little squeal and tucked my head between my knees to protect my eyes. “Elana.” He broke down a wall! My head was released from its safe spot between my knees and I looked over at the newly made hole glaring at me in the wall. Tentatively standing from my bed, I slowly walked over to it. Nathan's head was looking at me through the small hole, not any bigger than my hand. “Nathan!” I whispered in relief and made my way over to the crumbling wall. A piece of debris grabbed my foot, tripping me on a piece in the wall. I fell into the brick instead.

He was choosing me, over and over, in the middle of a fire meant to erase us both. We reached a long corridor that slanted upward. Fresh air teased us from somewhere ahead. Hope flared hard in my chest. Then the ceiling directly above us gave a long, terrible groan. Drake’s head snapped up. “Run” The world came down. Stone and dust exploded around us. Something heavy struck my shoulder and spun me sideways. I hit the ground hard, ears ringing. When the worst of the collapse settled I pushed myself up, coughing, and called his name.

"They think they’re coming for an asset, but there’s nothing left for them to manage. We’ve already burned the ledger." They scrambled into the darkness of the shaft, the metal groaning as the Spire shuddered under the strain of its final, terminal collapse. As they slid into the bowels of the mountain, Kael looked back once more. The violet light was gone, replaced by the flickering, warm, uncertain orange of real fire.

“Why is the dirt… sinking?” It was subtle at first. The ground didn’t drop. It compressed. Like the clearing was being pushed into a smaller version of itself. Trees leaned inward. Shadows shortened. Air thickened. Mael’s voice trembled. “It’s folding us.” “Yes,” I whispered. “It’s reducing space.” The hum returned. Satisfied. Collapse introduces resolution. Kairos spat into the dirt. “We’re not a math problem!” The earth compressed again. The trees were closer now. Branches scraping against each other without wind.

If I remembered them truly,if I held every scar, every fear, every laugh,they could walk again beside me. The power settled into my marrow like a second heartbeat. And then, the book crumbled. It just… dissolved. One moment it was there, the next, only a pile of fine gray ash on my desk. I tried to stand. My legs gave out. The world tilted. Darkness rushed in at the edges of my vision. I collapsed to the floor, my head striking wood with a dull thud. The last thing I felt was warmth spreading through my chest in completion. Then, nothing.

But this time— It wasn’t rupture. It was acknowledgment. “Why does it feel like this is bigger than Zane?” Aurora asked quietly. Elias looked out the window briefly before answering. “Because it is,” he said. Aurora frowned slightly. “Explain.” Elias turned back to her. “This isn’t about one collapse anymore,” he said. “It’s about how that collapse was possible inside a system that should have prevented it.” Aurora absorbed that.
