They walked back toward the edge of the clearing, where Ember stood leaning against a tree, arms crossed, her dark eyes glinting with quiet approval.
“You didn’t hold back,” Ember remarked.
“Why would I?” Aria shot back, a small smirk on her lips.
Ember uncrossed her arms, stepping closer, pressing a hand to Aria’s shoulder. “Because you’re alive again, and you matter. You’re not just a weapon, Aria.”
Aria placed her hand over Ember’s, squeezing it. “I know.”
They stood there, the three of them, the reborn queen, her shadow flame, and her loyal wolf, the dawn wind curling around them, carrying the scent of pine and promise.
