Ang buong akala ni Monica ay makakasama na niya ang kanyang nobyo na hindi niya nakita ng matagal na panahon dahil sa pangingibang bansa ngunit laking gulat niya sa kanyang paguwi ay may ibang babae na pala ang kaniyang nobyo. Sa sakit at paghihinagpis, napilitan si Monica na tanggapin ang alok ng kanyang madrasta na mag pakasal sa anak ng isang mayamang pamilya, ang pamilya Monterde. Pinaalalahan siya ng kaibigan niyang si Patricia na magiingat sa gagawin niyang desisyon dahil hindi basta basta ang papasukin niya ganun din ang pamilya nang papakasalan niya. Ngunit buo na ang loob ni Monica at handang gawin ang lahat dulot na lamang ng sakit na ginawa ni Jhorby, kahit na alam niya na tatlong buwan na lamang ang nalalabi sa buhay ng kaniyang papakasalan. Naiayos na ng mga magulang nila ang papel sa kanilang kasal at ang tanging hinihintay na lamang nila ay magkaanak at dalawa ngunit sa kasamaang palad ay ayaw ng lalaki kay Monica dahil alam rin nito na pera lamang ang habol nito at kanilang ari arian. Pero matapang at buong loob pa rin sa Monica sa kaniyang binabalak. Sa umpisa ng kanilang pagsasama ay, makikita na ayaw na ayaw talaga ni Fabian kay Monica ngunit may mga bagay na pinapatunayan si Monica at napapabilib nito ang lalaki at abangan sa mga susunod na kabanata kung ano nga ba kahihinatnan nang kanilang pagsasasama.
